This video I shot with my phone should explain the issue well enough. Guys with extensive Recto Pre experience are asked for help. Thanks.

I'd call Boogie.
It could be something like a bloated resistor (or some other component) on the front input (this can be caused by age or the stress of cable runs that are too long).
I had something like that happen on my TriAxis a long time ago (it only has a rear input, but the symptoms were very similar).

Why not just use the rear input?

Well, I've sent a detailed story of the issue via email to the guy at Mesa who has kindly answered my Modern Solo question. Now I will just wait and hope the guys come up with a solution. Right now I am indeed using the rear input of the preamp, but it would just seem a lot nicer if it all worked well :)

I've even considered linking the two inputs directly, but since they are sort of exclusive, I'll have to wait for the Mesa guys' reply prior to engineering my way to a fully functional front input. Here's my mail to Mesa:

"[...]
The second issue concerns the front input of the Recto Pre. From time to time, when connecting a guitar to the preamp's front input would result in low input signal. So low that I would have to really turn the master and gain way up to head the clean channel, and with the Red one (always in Modern mode) I barely get some crunch. Using the rear guitar input works perfectly in all situations.

I've opened the Recto Pre to check for loose connectors or tube sockets, and slightly bent the connector pins for the white ribbon cable running from the input module to the rear of the preamp, but to no avail. Funny thing that the front input seems to work after I remove that ribbon (and bear with the weird shrieks) and then reconnect it. I can't really rely on the front input for live gigs since it behaves so strange. Nevertheless I would love to see my Recto Pre in full working condition, since I really love the way your gear sounds.

Thanks a lot. Florin."
