Hi, I was wondering if anyone has heard the difference between running the Recto Pre with a Marshall EL100100 as opposed to the Mesa100100. I know the Mesa has the switch for Modern mode where the negative feedback is modified so I was wondering what the sound difference is.

Thanks.

Was using a Marshall 9200(6L6's) the Mesa 2:100 blows it away tone wise. No comparison.

Oh well. Something to look forward to when I eventually find a Mesa 2:100 over here for a decent price!

I've yet to get my new amp but it'll crap on my solid state Rocktron at least :)

Did the other Mesa power amps put the Marshall to shame also?

I thought the 2:90 sounded very similar to the 9200 but with more bells and whistles. The 2:50 was a tad colder sounding but also similar. Both Mesa's (2:50 and 2:90 Simul) were significantly louder than the Marshall.

Don't get me wrong I think the 9200 was a fine sounding amp and I used it for many years, it just became unreliable....the 2:100 did sound much better IMO though.

I slave out from my DR to the return side of a Marshall JCM 2K. This takes the pre amp out of the Marshall and allows the pre of the Mesa to be used with the power section of the Marshall. Look at my photo... that's my live rig.

Cheers for the info. Well I've been told from the local tech that the EL100s are a definite improvement over the 9200s including reliability. I'll still be getting a Mesa power amp in the future more so to save at least one rack space in my rig

I've just noticed the Marshall EL100 has an input for a remote switch to access their 'traditional' and 'modern' modes.

Has anyone tried running the external modern switch from the Rec Pre into the switching in of the Marshall? Does the Marshall modern mode modify the negative feedback like the Mesa 2:100 or (I'm guessing) is it totally different?

The Marshall manual is lame compared to the Mesa manual. I'll keep researching though. Cheers for any info people may have.

Before you get the Marshall power amp, consider the fact that you can swap the 6L6s in the Mesa 2:100 for EL34s. No bias required. It's just a 6L6/EL34 switch on the back. Users that have done this always say it has more of a Marshall tone. For a fact, EL34s in my old Trem-O-Verb head sounded a lot more Marshally to me, yet distinctly Mesa, which is what I prefer to use for most applications.

If you check the forum for topics related to EL34s in a DR, you'll find pretty much the same observation.
