I'm doing an outdoor gig this weekend and have been having a tough time getting the organizer to allow me to use my own amp (I was going to go with my LSS 1x12). The stage manager is much more reasonable and is actually a Dr. Z dealer (and GREAT guy); he told me I could definitely bring my amp but also said he'd bring whatever amp I wanted; I went to his store and tried a Dr. Z Maz 38 Sr 2x12. I had tried a Maz 18 Jr. the week before at a gig (cold, plug in turn on and play) and wasn't able to get what I wanted out of it. Since then I've heard a lot of great things and when I tried the Maz 38 Sr....wow, great, great tone. Now I'm torn; I have an LSC 2x12 and an LSS 1x12 (among other things; see list below) and really do love them both. I think dumping the LSC for the Dr. Z would not be right: the LSC has that BIG 6L6 tone, plus lot's of nice features. I'm also hesitant to dump the LSS: i've loved the furriness of it and again: features (also, its quite portable compared to the LSC; and the DR. Z, while lighter than LSC, doesn't have casters).

However, my instant take on the Dr. Z was this:

The Dr. Z, while more limited than the LSS, beats it on pure EL-84 tone; also, seems to have more clean headroom. Remember, this is just based on hammering the thing in a store for an hour and I will get to use it this weekend.

I could keep everything and spend another 2k to add yet another amp to the collection but I think I'd be pushing the limits of what my wife and budget is willing to accept (although I COULD do it).

QUESTION: (hopefully, you made it this far :))

Given these choices and your experience with either or both amps which do you recommend?

-Keep the LSS; forget about the Dr. Z;
---Assumption: I'll be fine with what I have: LSS, LSC + other stuff
-Buy the Dr. Z; dump the LSS
---Assumption: I won't look back, especially if I keep the LSC
-Buy the Dr. Z; keep the LSS
---Assumption: they are different enough to warrent the budget stretch
-Buy the Dr. Z; dump everything else;
---Assumption: the Dr. Z is just that good; and I won't end up missing the great hi-gain boogie stuff; just get a good pedal.
-Buy the Dr. Z; sell something else from the collection (see list below)
---The Dr. Z + Lone Stars will make up for losing either MkIIC+ or Evans
-Other option you might think of

Also, if I were to sell the Lone Stars:
-What should I expect to get for them: both are '07, very clean, owned about 3-4 months each.
-If I trade in to the store what should I expect to get for them? Sometimes I like the easy way :)

Thanks as always for your help.

Well first and foremost this is the Boogie Board, so I am sure to get flamed for what I'm about to say..... :?

The LSS is a nice amp...but like you said, the MAZ Sr. has more balls and a better EL84 tone

If clean headroom along with the EL84 tone is important to you over the channel switching and power scaling options of the LSS, then I'd say go for the MAZ.

I had the LSS twice -- and both times became disenchanted with it in a loud band setting, miking helps.....but I didn't like it as much when cranked (clean channel).

If I had to choose one or the other, feature set not widthstanding I'd go for the MAZ - it is flat out a better sounding EL84 amp IMHO.

So I guess I am voting for dumping the LSS, Get the MAZ and keep the LSC

Thanks for the help; this kinda matches my gut. Did you ever seriously miss the power-scaling and channel switching? What do you use for hi-gain lead tone (although, from what I was getting out of the Maz all you have to do is dial the guitar in and out and end up needing less 'distortion' gain.

Two things regarding this: I'm not necessarily disenchanted about the LSS clean (not that I can't see why one might be); I think it furs up early and nicely; all things being equal (except money) I'd keep it all.

How did you get rid of your LSS? How much did you get? You must have been sort of unhappy you did the first time right? (since you bought it again) Why did you rebuy?

Thanks again for all your help.

+1.
Don't get me wrong, the LSS is a really nice amp, but i'd prefer the Dr.Z.
It's just unique sounding. I'd say it's a good mix between something like a Vox Ac-30, and Marshall Bluesbreaker with some great Fenderstyle tones, too.

Another point already mentioned is more clean headroom and i really like the Master-Feature. All in all it's a very versatile Amp and well, it's handbuild :).

I frist purhased an LSS from GC (floor model), while they ordered me a new one. The new one came in and I don't know it just didn't cut it live, didn't have the mojo of the floor model I had previously.

Anyway, I returned it within the 30 day period..and ordered a Mark IV instead -- great move.

The second time around, I bought it as a way to dump my used 2:90 on GC for $900  in trade for another floor model LSS. It sounded good at home, but again tried it live and didn't like it -- so I returned it for a full refund. The 2:90 had sold, so, I got cash

Thanks. If I go with the Dr. Z and drop the LSS I will stand to lose some money, that's for sure.

Hmmm. Just looked up the Maz Sr.

30 watts w/4; El84's. 3 knobs.

No wonder I like my Blue Angel so much...........

You might want to look again.....as you misread the 8 after the 3 (as in 38 ) for a "0" (as in 30).

The MAZ Sr is 38 Watts...and there are more than 3 Knobs too.

Yea, my mistake, I was looking at Paisleys amp I think. I was actually looking at them all.

I do like an EL84 quad with no master best.

Best of luck.
