i was wondering what is the best way to clean the transformers on my dual rec's?

I was going to use a very fine sand grit(if you know the best grit let me know i was thinking a small amount of steel wool and and a light coat of naptha). Also should i use a little oil like a small drop when i do this? and would it hurt if i coated(lightly very lightly) with a small amount of petroleum jelly. a very light coat to prevent corrosion in the future or can this be problematic

Don't use metal. Safest thing is to leave them, rust isn't harmful.

If you must do something, clean them as best you can with a nylon-bristled brush, then paint them with Rustoleum.

if it really bugs you, here's what you can do. This is a tutorial I posted a few months ago. Ask me if you have questions.

Using steel wool is a BAD idea. DO NOT use steel wool.

I recommend using a 1.5+ hp disk sander with 60 grit emery paper... non magnetic and grind all that rust off! LOL :)

I agree completely, unless you're a freak like me and ensure that every last little particle gets taken out of the wiring. Most people wouldn't go through all that trouble, so I would not recommend it without the caveat.

No, it has nothing to do with the particles. When you abrade the edges of the laminates, you run a very high risk of shorting them to each other.

Each lamination is coated with an insulator, so that they are electrically isolated. Anything you do to the edges can cause them to 'bridge', which will reduce the efficiency of the transformer - make it run hotter, etc.

Use a nylon brush, it won't abrade the metal.
