Hi,

I just received my LSS head that I purchased last week on Ebay. In my initial test drive I am noticing that I get no volume increase when I switch from the 15 watt setting to the 30 watt setting. Is this expected at a fairly low volume or should there be a substantial volume boost when switching to the 30 watt setting? My thought is that there should be an increase but I want to make sure before I start digging into things.

Could this behavior be due to a faulty rectifier tube?

Thanks!

Scott

I don't notice much of a volume difference on mine between 15 & 30W. I do notice a lot more clean headroom. The 30W mode is solid state rectified so the tube rectifier is probably not the problem (but its not a bad idea to pick up a spare anyway).

Volume doesn't increase linearly as wattage increases, it increases logarithmically. 30 watts will only be 3 db louder than 15 watts. In order to double the volume of a 15-watt amp, you actually need a 225-watt amp.

The difference in decibels between two sounds is given by the formula:
dB=10 log10(P1/P2), where P1 and P2 are the power levels of the two sounds. The faintest audible sound, corresponding to a sound pressure of about 0.0002 dyne per sq cm, is arbitrarily assigned a value of 0 dB. The loudest sounds that can be tolerated by the human ear are about 120 dB. The level of normal conversation is about 50 to 60 dB.
A ten-fold increase in power is required to double the decibels.
In other words, to be twice as loud as a 15 watt amp, you need 150 watts.

I found the same,...

Actually,I don't think the LSS is very loud at all,it sounds great,..just doesn't get LOUD.

I have a Nomad 45,that will make your ears bleed,....but the LSS is pretty tame,.. even on the 35 watt setting it is really noticeably quieter,..but it sounds better.
