Hi all

I am looking at buying an effects unit to use with my dual recto and was wondering what units anyone out there would recomend. I was thinking of buying a pod x3 live because of all the effects wah/volume pedal all in the one unit as well as being able to DI into my computer to record. I just thought it seemed like a pretty good all in one. Does anyone out there have any thoughts?

I saw your post and i had to answer it.....

here it is........

last summer i was on the same track as you. but i was using a pod pro XT rack. I wanted the ease of one unit in a rack.. I failed miserably. I even bought the metal shop upgrades..

I could never get the sound i was looking for using this pod pro xt.
my problem was that i was running it through a marshall 900 jcm half stack.

the crunch was thin.. and i could never get a heavy rectifier gain.

SO I SOLD IT TO MY OTHER GUITARIST>> HE Ran the pod pro xt thru his MESA 2: 100! JUST ONLY ONE CHANNEL>>>>>>> MY God he got a great sound out of it! tone and searing gain for lead work. MESA SOUND! LAMB OF GOD< SLIPKNOT< METALLICA< you name it he can achieve the tone and sound...
with plenty of thickness and gain saturation! his sound is TIGHT!

its almost sound like a dual rect stack combined with the creaminess of a marshall Halfstack...

What was funny ....... he uses the same exact presets that i had built!

Right now i am using a Triple Rect w /4x12 standard mesa cab.i use a G-Major in the effects loop. and a tubescreamer . a ROcktron patchmate to controll all switching....
I STILL CAN NOT get a good tone .. When we play side by side his sound is perfectly compressed and with great gain saturation. his low end is TIGHT! and it sound DEEP!

Mine is still loose on the low end and i have to fight to get a good gain saturation when i solo! .. the fingertips to string response is dry and no sustain.. DOnt get me wrong it sounds like a mesa. but not as tight! When you play live the nuisuances are an extra bother. So i may be looking for the same set up as his.....

IF you do get a pod 3 dont get the live version (floorboard) it is constructed cheaper.

And run it through (power amp mode) and into the Effects loop return of your dual rectifier! let your pod 3 be the preamp only! dont run it through the front of your amp! too many objects to discolor your pod's TONE.

one of my guitarists uses a PODXT 2.0 into a rectifier with a series loop.

Here's the thing that will either make it or break it for you:

1) Can the POD do the 4 cable method, which allows wah and distortions in front of the amp and time-based effects in the efx loop? If not, you have to compromise a lot of effects.

2) Does your recto have a series or parallel loop? A series loop will work flawlessly with your POD, whereas a parallel loop will give you some headaches.

3) Are you willing to invest in an axess cfx4? This unit will allow you to switch effects on the POD and channels on your amp at the same time.

These are pretty much the questions you need to ask yourself with any multi-fx unit, whether it's a POD or a BOSS, etc.

Personally not my choice
The X3 is a modeler not a effects unit, (I know you can bypass the amp sims)if this is the way you plan on running it. I rather get a unit like a Rocktron or TC Electronics which is a dedicated effects unit where you would also be able to control effects in real time also these units will not color your sound or should I say that much. But the effects themselves are allot more flexable as far as programming effects.

If you plan on using your DR just as a power amp that is a different story.

But do yourself a big favor and go over to the X3 forums there seem to be some hardware issues going on, I almost got one myself a few weeks ago and there seems to be a fair amount of software issues (which don’t concern me all that much Line 6 will have firmware upgrades)but hareware that’s a different story. Come to think of it I have seen some people having midi issues. Bottom line know what you are getting into.

After my experiences with the pod pro xt and pod 2, I would never again try to use them in my effects loop of my rectifiers. no matter how i set my amps' WET knob to. It sounded "nasal" and thin.

these modeling effects processors only sound good if you bypass the Rects preamp section and run only into the power amp section.

Any pod processors with amp modelling (or any simulators that emulated gain structures) will never sound good in these rectifiers effect loop.
Even though you bypass the amp modellers/ distortion, they still have no tone what so ever.

LIKE i said previously my buddy runs his pod pro xt thru a MESA stereo 2:100.. he just uses one side of his power amp into one 8 ohm carvin cab. sounds pretty close to my sound.

Again if it were me? i would wait to see if LINE 6 comes out with a rack version of the pod 3. I still see alot of people unloading their pod 3 LIVE at guitar centers.

NOw the line 6 DL4 (green delay stomp box) sound great in the Effect loop. It dont have distortion options built in.
