Hi. my dual rec started to sound weird and i feel liek its lacking alot of gain (i have to crnk the treble and gain to 10 to get an avergae amount of gain from it) to my knowledge, the preamp tubes are the stock mesa and weren't changed. i changed out the power tubes about a year ago because of red plating. amp tech checked it over and said to replace the power tubes so i did. now, maybe should i replace preamp tubes? and or power tubes? i play hard rock/ modern metal so i want a modern really high gain thick chunk (chuga chuga) sound. wat tubes would you recooment adn at wat position? can anyone also explain wat phase inverter position is and wat V1 V2 V3 V4 V5 is? sorry but im unexperienced. please let me know. thanks guys.

I'm about to do a full retube. Would also be interested in knowing what people recommend for complete sets.

Whoops, I suppose that would be helpful as you guys have probably forgotten who I am lol.

Most of what I do with my Mesa uses bold, heavy lows with open picking and tight, defined palm muted picking.

I want to make my DR sound as much like Adam Jones' (of TOOL) as possible, as I cover Tool's entire discography with the DR.

I would settle for a Born Naked (more guttural) kind of sound. I have no "real" idea what 6L6's sound like in comparison to EL34's, or what different brands sound like. I've used Rubies, they're reliable, but I'd like to experiment.

Any suggestions for Power/Preamp tubes would be greatly appreciated, as I am only beginning my experimentation and need as much guidance as I can get. Thanks in advance.

Hmm. wow. thanks. i only thought one brand of tubes to put in there woudl be good. like all 12ax7 JJ Teslas. I think i could buy all those preamp tubes. they shouldn't be that expensive. Why do you say that the Tesla is expensive and scarce? its like $12? Do you think i should replace my power tubes? I like the amp sound of Throwdown, August Burns Red, Bloodstain Child. They all use Mesa Rectifiers. Wat are the V1-V5 mean? Like position 1 and stuff?

Shredd6 was referring to original Teslas which command somewhere between 80 to 100 bucks on ebay the last time I checked. JJ/Tesla is a different company. You might wanna download the manual from Mesa's website the get an idea what each tube position does (V1, V2 etc.).

Adding to Trem's and Shredd's posts, the Tesla they are talking about is called e83cc or ecc803s, not ecc83, they (e83cc/ecc803s) are a clone of the Telefunken ecc803s made on the Telefunken tooling. Most but not all have gold plated pins. The JJ/Tesla ecc83 is not if the quality that the vintage Tesla e83cc/ecc803s in construction or sonics. The vintage Tesla is a 10,000 hour tube and is worth the money. Beware of the fakes occasionally showing up on eBay in the red, black and white boxes with a singler getter support arm on top of the flat plate above the top mica. Real ones tend to come in blue, yellow, and white boxes, have two getter supports, and you can see between the plates on the real ones, the fakies have additional metal folded so one can not see between the plates when trying to look at the tube from the side of the bottle..
