Hi guys. I'm your newest Australian member, and I've just become the proud owner of a 3 channel Tri Rec. It's an amazing amp and I'm dying to really gun it in the rehearsal studio soon. I'm a bit fuzzy regarding valves as my last amp was a solid state hybrid Randall so maybe somebody here can help me with a bit of info. I bought this amp used but it's in excellent condition and sounds fantastic, but just after we finalised the sale I asked the seller how long the valves had been in it and I'm pretty sure he said about three years.

I'm not too up on valves and I guess I should have asked the question sooner, but that seems like a long time to me. He said it hadn't had a lot of use in that time and if the exterior is anything to go by it looks like it hasn't been used much at all.

Anyways like I said it sounds great and if the valves are on the way out then I can't imagine how good a new set will sound so should I be thinking of a re-valve or just go with it until I notice a difference in the sound?

It is typically a good idea to change out power tubes if you pick up a used amp. However, if you know/trust the guy and the tubes really don't have many hours on them, then you're probably good for a while.

Well I didn't know the seller; I hadn't met him until I bought the amp so I guess I'll have to accept what he told me about it not having too much use and the implication that the tubes should still be okay. A thorough work out in a band situation should put things in a better light.
