.....There's another thread on here started, or contributed to, by Bobby Womack, that has a link to a review he wrote for his 5:25 that clearly explains where the tone knobs and the contour fit in the circuit, and how to get the most out of them when you're dialing in your sound. I found this quite useful, and the principles he discusses are applicable to the other Mesas with either a graphic EQ or a contour control of some kind. Happy tone hunting!!!

I couldn't find the link for this review would you mind linking me up?
Oops! My apologies if you were looking for a Bobby, as his name here is Bob. Anyway, here's the link to his review, where it is explained in the Mesa Preamp Topology, Philosophy paragraph : http://www.in2guitar.com/express.html .

Plus, the rest of his review is a good read, including the Hints/Notes briefs.

Thank you!

Out of curiosity yesterday I took a look at what tubes are in my 5:50, and to my surprise they are as follows:

V1 - Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7
V2 - High gain JJ ECC83S
V3 - Penta Labs 12AX7C
V4 - Shuguang 12AX7C9
V5 - Sovtek 12AX7LPS

I may try swapping the jj and the tung sol.

Yours must be a used amp that has already had Doug's tube recommendation fitted.
You got the same tubes as me.
Can't understand your bass issues really.
I just posted my version of Audioslave's "Out of Exile" on my soundclick site below.
I used an SG thru the 5:50 mic'ed C90 speaker - burn channel Gain at 12 oclock - Bass at 10 oclock - no contour engaged - 5w setting.
I played bass on this track as well.
I don't think lack of bass is an issue on my 5:50.
Click on the link below and it'll self load

I love my 5:50 2x12. I leave it in the bedroom. The 5 watt setting is good, but it sounds better on the 50 watt.
I had an ElectraDyne for a week, brought it back to Guitar Center because I was getting a loud pop switching to standby.
Left it there and came home with a Royal Atlantic Head. This amp rocks.
With the Multi-Soak, you can drop it down to 3 Watts, and it sounds fine.
I'm playing it through a 4x12 Road King cab, and I have no trouble dialing it in.
Don't demo the Royal Atlantic------you'll be $1800 poorer.

BTW, I'm also running Doug's Tubes in my 5:50

The RA-100 is probably the best amp in the mesa line for the marshall thing. It sounds really cool from what i have heard.. BTW nice to see someone from my neck of the woods on hear!

I really want to hear this amp with a 4-12 cab, but I don't have one & too cheap to spring for it & too lazy to haul it around.

Okay, I realize this is an old post but then, I haven't logged in, in months! I have a 5:50 Head and a Stiletto 4x12 cab, pure love! WOW! The amp comes to life with this set up. I have an acquaintance, who owns a 5:25 combo and when we got together a few months ago he plugged his amp into my Stiletto 4x12 and he nearly died! I actually like the 5:25 now. He is saving his pennies, kissing his wife's ....... (I think he's even doing the dishes, mopping the floor & the doing laundry) and whatever else it takes so he can buy a 4x12 cab!
