If you were planning on moving to an area that you have never been to before, would you post your resume on Monster, Career Builder, etc.?

Or...would you just start calling around to find someone that is hiring?

I have been working with Home Automation (extremely high end to middle priced) since 1997 and am moving to the Nashville area at the end of the year. I haven't really had to look for a job for quite some time. Had my own business for over 4 years and have worked for another company for a little over 7 years.

 Last resume I used was on a 5 1/4 floppy!

Wait, you're ditching Maui for Nashville? I'm sure your amp mod / repair business will take off like crazy once you are back on the mainland! I wish I could take a rain check for your 1/2 sale since my Boogie will need a tune up in a couple of years.

Well....I make $32 an hour and we are broke at the end of every week! Gas is always at least $1 more than the Mainland, and milk is up to $8 a gallon depending on where you have to get it.

The cost of living here basically doubled in the 4 years we were on the Mainland.
Sucks because this is my favorite place to live. I've been here over 13 years and it's absolutely beautiful. The people (most of them) are very warm and friendly if you are the same.

I would really love to live in a place that would have enough amp work for me to just quit my day job. If you could do what you loved to do for a living and still feed your family, well.....maybe the American dream isn't dead after all!

The recession is barely beginning to peak here. When my job is over in December, we have no more work lined up! Pretty scary since I have 3 small kids to feed.

Thanks Ned!
I've already begun emailing all of the home automation companies in the area as well as the manufacturers that we rep out here.
I'm hoping that someone will be looking for a good employee!
We were looking at Austin too, but the cedars and junipers would murder me in the spring! Pines are ok though!

... check out Craiglist employment ad. You'll be amaze how many employers, companies puts ads up there. well in my area (Bay Area).

I honestly would do both. Establishing personal contact is important and the websites will definitely give you leads to contact and apply. Once you are in Nashville and settled I'm bringing you my boogie :)

Hey Monsta...
After spending the better part of the last 18 months trying to get my job situation settled, I can tell you this: As goofy as it sounds, the Monster board does work. Headhunters started calling me almost immediately after I posted on there last year. Of all places, GE in Louisville is talking to me now!!. Nothing definite, but the door opened a crack, so I'm trying to get in! Some other places to post are Dice, Indeed, and Careerbuilder - I've gotten pretty good response with those sites as well. The job search rules are WAY different nowadays. Almost everything is done online....kinda weird.
I did get your PM the other day. Thanks for replying so fast...I wasn't quite ready for that  . I too am probably going to wait until you're set up in Nashville to send you my Boogie. I just had it serviced in November, so I should be good for a while.
Good luck on your search....rock on!!

I would try to establish as many person connections as possible.

I second this, I heard recently that something like 70% of jobs are never posted. Connections are king

I gotta put in a (selfish...) request for a good Boogie amp tech Down Under..
It's plenty warm, nice beer..
We are usually on the underside of the planet, bet we do have telephones and the internet...LOL
And hey, only a 12-odd hour flight back to the mainland...
What a bargain!!

Actually sounds great! But....my wife wouldn't leave our guns here!
We both grew up in places where you wouldn't really want to be without them.

in my experience, going to the town, calling for interviews, and even cold calls, where someone gets to actually meet you, if far superior than headhunters or shopping resumes on line.

To be honest I would do any and everything to get your name and resume out. I worked in construction for 22 years and was laid of on December 24th. I would do it all and try to find a job placement service as a back up. In California we have CalJobs which is a state run site for employers/job seekers. Tennessee might have something just like it I would assume.
Good luck my man!
