I've just bought a headshell for my MkIII (Green Stripe) and done the swap.

I'm leaving the reverb in the combo. This leaves a fair amount of
open space at the bottom of the head shell. With this much airflow
would I really need the fan?

I run the master on 3 max, and mainly do jazz,
blues, or freelance function work. No metal or hard rock

I don't remember having a fan in my MkII head years ago and had no probs.

I personally think the fan is a good idea. Cool tubes are happy tubes. It's not only tubes, heat will shorten the life of every component in the amp, thats why they added that big heatsink on the rear panel and the fan as well.
It's just my opinion, but like I said, I think it's a good idea.
Even with the fan running, the transformers in my amps get very hot by the end of the night, and if you've ever felt the magnets on the rear of the speakers after running express all night, they're hot (well, warm anyway) as well.
The fan helps with all of this and I believe extends the life of all.
Jim
