If you want to be a contemporary metal head the it's all about teh br00talz.
Buy a dual rec, tune your 8 string bc rich to #C and dime the gain. Don't forget the 808 boost up front.
If you're talking about the older genre of metal then you need a Mark or JCM style amp and serious pikin skills. :D

I'd break it down into thrash (Metallica/Slayer/Anthrax, etc), Glam/Hair (Motley Crue/Poison/Ratt/EVH), and Nu Metal (Slipknot/Lamb of God/Killswith Engage).
To me the older thrash/hair metal was guitar heaven. Lots of great riffs and melodic super fast stuff. I hate the nu metal crap. Everything is de-tuned mud with simple minded lyrics and no thought of producing anything "musical" as an end result.

hey gts,

are you puppying with us? hehe

old school metal? Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, G'nR, Judas Priest, Misfits, Flotsam and Jetsam, Megadeth, Van Halen, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus, Krokus, mercyful fate, metal church, Thin Lizzy, Night Ranger, accept, Armored Saint, Extreme (nuno b.), Ratt, Scorpions, Kiss, Alice cooper, quiet riot, and metallica to name some. I'm sure you know, but check out Ride the lightening. Kirk's solo on that song is ridiculous. That whole album is great. Kill 'EM ALL too, though I love all their crap. Steve Lukather is an amazing shredder too. jack blades... lot of great guitarists in the 80's. marty friedman, dave mustaine (spider chords).

I think a lot of british bands got the ball rolling in the 70's, especially motorhead (Lemmy is God), Metallica changed the scene a bit in the 80's, then maybe the Seattle bands in the early 90's took it for another turn. From a "Boogiecentric " point of view, when the Dual Rectifier was introduced. Time to put your Coliseum to work!

so much good music to listen to, great guitarists, that don't get enough attention cause appearance or genre

You're definition of 'Nu metal' is way off, 'Nu metal' does indeed suck but it's more like Limp Bizkit and Korn, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nu_metal. Lamb Of God is not 'nu metal' (nor is Killswitch Engage). If LoG is nu-metal, so is Pantera. As for de-tuned muds, how is drop-d that de-tuned? To each his own and that is why I'm chiming in. ;)

I think almost anyone can enjoy a little metal. My 70 yr old mom... she got a new car with iPod input, so when we went for a ride one day I brought my phone and plugged in. I love most music, but yes, i'm a huge Metallica fan, and I played a bunch of metallica songs, not the super fast ones, but still with heavy guitars, and she thought they were pretty good... after her ignorance all these years telling me that that music was terrible. After my surgery in '09, my dad took me to metallica show in NYC. Again, not a fan, but he thought it was a cool show, and my mom wants to go next time. I know them very well, and I'm sure they weren't just saying that to make me feel better.

About Sabbath sounding bluesy, well old school metal is rooted in the blues. Before metal, blues was the "heaviest" stuff out there. Dial the gain up a bit, speed up the tempo, some palm muting, finger tapping, trem dive, pissed off lyrics, head banging and you have metal. Sabbath was one of the first, and I'm sure every 80's band guitarist wanted to be Tony Iommi or Lemmy (bass). I think a lot of rock music with good guitar is rooted in the blues. And for you liking sabbath, they were the big band of that time, and after that you grew a bit, and the genre evolved to a point where it wasn't your style.

Some bands, may be on the cusp of old school metal/classic rock, but maybe they can fall on either side of the fence. Thin Lizzy may be a stretch, but maybe they helped inspire some 80's metal a little. I feel like metal guitar can infiltrate a lot of genres. like EVH solo on Michael Jackson "Beat it". that's a pop song with heavy guitar. Steve Lukather, I feel was almost restrained by Toto. What if he paired up with Tony Iommi, or another great heavy rhythm guitarist. A lot of metal lead guitar are pentatonic scales and other modes, from the blues. Also, I think if you really want to shred, pick up learning classical guitar.

My sister in law, always beats on me for liking metal, and metallica, even though she's ignorant of the music style. I get that she doesn't like it, and it's not her thing, but she can't discount a whole genre of music because of her taste. People listen to metal without realizing it... commercial on tv, watching sports on tv, tv shows... when thy cut to commercial, a soundbite...

My homework, is to listen to Kill "em All and Ride the Lightning. I know it's not your thing, but isolate the guitar parts and I think you will find some pretty good stuff in there. Do it with an open mind, you might be surprised what you find.

What's 'noob' about this? Then again, perhaps you use 'noob' the same way you use 'nu-metal,' completely different than I do.

Good way to start a fight! I hate the term "hair metal" as referenced to progressive guitar playing. Listen to "I'm The One" on Van Halen's first album and then talk to me about overdubbs and solos.

yes, I agree blues if the foundation for rock music in general, but we were being specific about metal, and yes Lemmy is from Motorhead.

I think looking back on Sabbath now, it may be hard to call them metal, but during their early days what would you call them? Of we were in 1970 or so right now, what genre would we put them in, without knowing the future bands that would evolve. When was the term "metal" even coined?
I think I'm trying to say that when having a discussion of metal, some of the 70's bands should be included.

Now you've done it. I had to break out the first Sabbath album and listen to "Behind the Wall of Sleep" on vinyl, no less. Geezer Butler is THE MAN on bass guitar in the rock scene, without a doubt.

"Hand of Doom" off their 2nd album has a unique vibe to it.

In general while this thread may have been a bit tongue in cheek it was in no way meant to mock metal or anybody that is into it.

Completely tongue in cheek for me, as I started playing electric guitar in the early 1980's. I was a devout hard rock/metalhead until the early 1990's when either the music and/or my playing style changed. I still bust out the "metal" CD's from time to time, mostly as "mood music" for my drive to and from work. Some say I am an aggressive driver.

ahh...I like the direction we are heading in...!
whata way to wake up on a sat morn...some vintage Mule-check out WH and how he drives a Paul properly!!knobs and pu selector, hell yeah..**** good one
saw them at the VApors Club in hville right after they released the first recording...oh man!they had a problem with the microphone, so they launched into an extended Sabbath jam-one of the greatest shows I have ever seen, because it was a slow Thurs night with about 100 people in the club-warren and woody walked up to the bar and grabbed a brew during the 1st break right next to me-we chatted and drank a couple-it was just like watching a local band/no green room,etc...talked briefly about his rig-they were in no hurry to get away and it was just like we all knew each other
-and boy, did I hurt Fri morn!

Lamb of God is numetal? I actually know those guys...they're going to have a good laugh.

I listen to everything and metal just fits best for me right now. To me, metal is subjective and at it's core...it's just really fast blues music combined with elements of pop and classical (like Bach/Mozart not Styx or The Eagles...nothing against classic rock).

Metal these days is a purgatory of bizzaro sub-genres. There are some good sounds and good groups out there like Meshuggah and As I Lay Dying, but really everything has been done before in one fashion or another. Most bands are trying very hard to copy a trend or create a trend from a decade long since past. I'll be honest, 98% of it is all nonsense. There are very few bands that actually present themselves realistically (starving musicians doing what they do because they have nothing else, or a bunch of regular guys with jobs that do this for FUN). The reality is that there is no future in metal music. It is fun music and can be entertaining if you know how to put on a show. It's loud as f*ck and honestly it gets old real fast. Unless you're doing something legitimately artistic and creative, then you'll be grouped in to the 98% of the douchers that do this because they have delusions of grandeur or wanna be's who are afraid of who they really are (and perhaps for good reason).

I've been drinking Barefoot Pinot Noir, but that's my two cents.
