In nearly three years of owning my Mark V head it hadn't occured to me until now to try using the slave output. Last night I decided to give it a shot, and I'm really happy with the results so far. I have a Carvin Legacy that hasn't seen much use since buying my Mark, and it has a set of JJ E34L's in the power section.

Running the Mark into the Legacy's E34L power section and into a separate 4x12 cab really fattened things up, and channel two and three really came alive with this setup. Especially crunch, that mode sounds great with the E34Ls.
Channel three on extreme mode sounded reminiscient of the Master of Puppets tone, as the IIC+ slaved into a Marshall power section played a big part in that sound. I'm definitely not trying to cop Metallica sounds, but i think the Carvin power section in addition to the Mark adds awesome texture in the mids.

Added bonus: my effects pedals that were rendered useless by the Mark V effects loop are also being used between the Mark V slave and the Legacy loop return in a wet/dry setup. Has anyone else tried using a similar setup?

Cool! 8)

I also use my Mark V with a Legacy 1 & my G System.
I generally just use the power amp section of the Legacy for the Right channel to give me stereo.
I find it matches the Mk V really well when used like this as a second channel for stereo.

Amateur question here but the signal chain goes from the Mark V slave out to the FX return on the other head? I just tried slaving my Mark V in the IV like that and I heard a little hum when I powered up. Normal?

Yeah most likely just a ground loop.
One way to sort it is use a balanced cable & connect the head thru an Ebtech Hum eliminator.
I always use one for one head when running in stereo through my G system.

I get some humming through the Legacy running it this way, though it's minimal enough for me to just deal with it for the time being. I was thinking it's probably a ground loop issue as well.

Thanks guys I just wanted to make sure I wasn't hurting anything.

I used to do this with my legacy head and the peters dual channel I used to own. It sounded stellar. I also used the legacy's front guitar input as opposed to the loop. Sounded good that way too.

Yeah that would work. I tried that too but found I preferred it un coloured by the pre amp & just use a vol box in the loop to adjust the level. Works great!

This is a pretty interesting topic and it makes me wonder how different power sections would work with the Mark V. I like the Fryette's approach to their power sections. I would be interested to see how the Mark V would sound through a Fryette Pittbull UL or Two/Ninty/Two power amp. I currently run KT66's in my Mark V and I noticed a pretty significant improvement.
