Oh, and which particular model Yellow Jacket and tubes are you using if it were to fit in the head that you got.
Thanks,
Mark
Hey Mark:
The total length of my Yellow Jackets with a JJ EL84 in place (and including the pins on the adapter) is 5-1/2 inches. So if you have 5-1/2 inches or more clearance between the bottom of your tube socket and the inside bottom of the head cabinet they will fit. This is the (standard model) THD YJSD; which is the longest version.
If you don't have this much clearance you might be able to use the (short model) THD YJSHORTD: which is about 1/2 to 5/8-inches shorter; but it is also more expensive. So, if you have 5-inches clearance; you could use these.
Groove Tubes makes their own version the 'Substi-Tube' 928-PR Duet Power Reducers. These are SHORTER THAN EITHER VERSION of the THD Yellow Jackets.
I don't know which brand is best as I've only used the THDs. You hear opinions going both ways. The ones I have are the THD YJSD 'Yellow Jackets' I mentioned above.
The only tubes I've used thus far have been JJEL84s; simply because I tried them first and was very pleased with them.
If you check eBay you can indeed get bargains on these. The sellers frequently don't give the model numbers because they mainly handle only the most common model (the one you would need that would go into the LSC and other common 6V6/6L6/EL34 amps). I bought mine there for about $65.00 a pair new.
Just make very sure from seller that their price is for a 'PAIR' and that the model they're offering is for use in COMMON 6V6/6L6/EL34 amps (NOT Cathode-Bias or Single-Ended Class A amps that might happen to use these tubes).
Hope this helps you.
