OK.....I had to sell my Lonestar Special.....but I still have my Lonestar. Now the one thing I really liked about my Special was the high end jingle on the clean channel. Now I've been told that if I get Yellow Jackets and run 84's.....that my Lonestar will sound just like the Special. So questions are

For those who have done this with thier Lonestar, what combination did you run?
84's in all 4 positions?
84's on the inside position with 6L6's on the outside?
84's in the outside position with 6L6's on the inside?

Whats the sound differences on the 3 combinations?

Also, If I end up running all 4 84's......do I leave the switch on the back on 6L6, or EL34?

Any preferences out there?????

Thanks for any info.

You'll need Charles to chime in on this one. He'll be along soon enough. Or do a search on some of his threads. "Charles Reeder"

hey 'pjlcc14':

'plan-x' is right....(about doing searches). I just did a few 'trial-searches' to see what I would come up with.

Try the following:
#1. Lonestar and Yellow Jackets
#2. Lonestar and EL84

and may I also suggest:
#1. Lonestar and 6v6

All of the above came back with useful info:

In addition...as 'plan-x' has mentioned...I have posted quite a bit on other folks threads about using Yellow Jackets, El84s, 6V6s AND a COMBINATION of Yellow-Jackets(with EL84s) and 6V6s together.

So...you might want to do a search and check out some of my posts. If you do...you'll see why I didn't post some more direct answers here. I DO TEND to 'blather-on'...and I imagine everyone here is sick of my long answers!

After reading this stuff until you are full up to the gills and ready for a good stiff drink...you might consider PMs to 'djw', 'plan-x', 'pine' and others personally...and ask for some 'testimonials' about their experience with these various tube combinations. There are others who have tried and enjoyed them as well...but I'm trying to keep this brief!

Happy Hunting: Charles

Yes. YJs + 6V6s = yummy yummy yummy.

I've gone back and forth between JJ and EH brand 6V6s, and my rig seems to like the EHs, in the inner slots/YJs outer, amp at full power. This config seems to really bring out the chime and jangle on top, nice breakup with full-bodied clarity. Very 3-dimensional.

I use this setup all the time now, with some experimentation. JJs are nice too, just less chimey in my experience. Charles has suggested ~20# rated JJ 6V6s with the EL34 bias setting on the amp; this is really cool too -- warm, sweet breakup, browner -- but right now I prefer the EHs at 6L6 bias.

It's the LSC advantage, being able to tweak all of these options.

Well....after a lot of reading, as suggested by Mr Reeder.......I think I am going to look at the (EL84) - (6L6) - (6L6) - (EL84) first. From the reading, it seems to be what I'm looking for. So with this Combination, if I get this right it will be as follows:

#1 - Tweed Power - 50Watt - Will use the outside 84's Only - Wattage output @ ??

#2 - Tweed Power - 100Watt - Will use all 4 tubes - Wattage output @ ??

#3 - Full Power - 50 Watt - Will use the outside 84's only - Wattage Output @ ??

#4 - Full Power - 100Watt - Will use all 4 tubes - Watage Output @ ??

Can anyone fill in the blanks on the Wattage Output? And did I get the rest of it right??

'pjlcc14':

These are at best approximations

The outer tube sockets are the ones which are in use on the 50-watt setting...so by using the EL84s in the outside sockets...your wattages (using the Solid-State rectifier) will be approximately.....

Tweed Power - 50Watt - Will use the outside 84's Only - Wattage output @ 12 to 15 watts.

Tweed Power - 100Watt - Will use all 4 tubes - Wattage output @ 47 to 50 watts.

Full Power - 50 Watt - Will use the outside 84's only - Wattage Output @ 15 to 20 watts.

Full Power - 100Watt - Will use all 4 tubes - Wattage Output @ 65 to 70 watts.

Using the tube rectifier on the 50-watt setting you might lose a few more watts.

Have fun! Charles

Yep, Charles is the best.

Just for fun, if you're interested, I posted a clip earlier in the Rigs & Tones forum here, which does more to feature the Drive channel (but they're both in there); you get the idea. It's the EL84/6V6/6V6/EL84 config, with settings described.

Also, my buddy just today posted a really brief video on YouTube of us rehearsing last night, and all vanity aside it actually captures the chime of the setup very nicely, clean channel. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YONb-hBqviY

djw, that was some nice tone. What kind of guitar are you playing, a les paul? It was hard to tell the camera kept moving. It was making me dizzy. LOL :?

Hey, thanks plan-x! Yeah, that's my 2001 Gold Top Standard. Stock and oh so sweet... and sounds really good through that LSC. :D
