Hi everyone, I just got a Quad last week to go along with the Mesa 50/50 I'd been using for a short while before that. I'm still in the "move the controls a smidge, play some licks, move the controls a little more" stage with the Quad, but I've already gotten some nice lead tones just by using the recommended settings in the manual as a starting point.
My style/sound is sort of distorted Zappa meets Holdsworth, so it's probably not going to excite metalheads everywhere, even though I do use a lot of gain. I just recorded two clips that posted to my SoundClick site: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=706278&content=music
"Legato Funk v.4" uses Lead Channel 2, while "Legato Funk v.3" is on Lead Channel 1. My setup on these is as follows: Heritage H-157 Black Beauty w/Duncan Distortions --> Mesa Quad --> Mesa 50/50 (vol. at just under "6", with a little presence) --> Grendel Dead Room iso cab w/Celestion V30 --> Audix i5 dynamic mic --> ART Digital MPA II mic preamp --> Korg D3200 recorder --> aux send to Fractal Audio Axe-FX for chorus and delay. Whew!
At the same lead settings, Channel 2 of the Quad seems to be a little juicier and more compressed, while Channel 1 is brighter and more open. I goosed the overall gain a little higher on Chan. 2 on these clips--actually, slightly lower Lead Drive but nearly dimed on the Volume.
