His amps are Mark IV and Lonestars. He has a refrigerator sized rack that MAY contain every guitar toy ever invented.

There was a guitar player or guitar world mag recently that had him outlining his rig.....pretty sure it was guitar player but I may be wrong.

Not on the last one.....he hasnt used Rectifier series amps for several years now. I dont know what he used on the Japanese G3 DVD.

Doesn't he like rectifier sound? What do you think about rectifiers?

Watch the vid, he talks about the rectifier sound.

I dont like rectifiers very much. For what they are they are cool amps...just not for me.

I prefer a clearer tone.

He has used Rectos several times, now he's using Mark IV's. It's only a matter of taste. Here is his latest G3 rig:

Two Mark IV's in stereo, through a Mesa Amp Switcher. Each preamp is for different purposes, one Lead channel for rhythms and the other for leads. And his standard array of effect processors and pedals.

I wanted to buy a Mark IV. But here in italy they cost too much and i don't want to spend that money. So i was looking for mark iv in usa, because they're cheaper there. But your voltage is 110v and in europe is 230v, so i should buy a transformer. During the transport it could be broken, so i decide don't buy the mark IV
I've a dc5, but i want to change it. Here i can buy a mesa dual rectifier, so i was asking you what do you think about rectifiers!

Sorry for my english :(

Rectifiers and Mark series sound nothing alike. It's a completely different sound. Your DC5 will sound closer to a Mark than a Recto will. I'd stick with what you have if you're trying to get closer to Petrucci's tone (which will be difficult, given the number of other stuff in his chain).

Yes, i know it's impossible to copy jp's rig! So my dc5 is closer to a mark than a rectifier...And what do you think about a rack solution (triaxis + 20/20 or 50/50)?

Well yeah, that'd be nice too. That's a nice setup, if you can get a good price on it. JP did use the Triaxis in his earlier days, specifically on LTE stuff.

Ah yes. The Eventide DSP 7000 and TC Electronic 2290.

I'd do despicable things to acquire either one...

I have the G3 Live in Tokyo dvd and he used two Roadking I heads. One had the polished diamond plate which made it look like a normal DR. The front panel indicators showed both amps stayed on channel 3 with the loops engaged and both heads running on the quad's of 6L6's in Tube Rec mode. Sorry I can't tell you where the knobs and mini swtiches were set, but my super duper zoom-in eyes can't tell you because they never give a real close view of the amp heads during the show. His attack seemed strong, so I would expect there were set to Bold.

The pics posted earlier in this thread are of an older rig he had/has back when he still had long hair (see pic).

Hope this helps.

Yes, that was during the ToT - Octavarium days. Then he switched to the rig I posted above.

If you want to hear a typical JP rectifier rhythm tone check out the Dream Theater albums Train of Thought and Octavarium. For Mark tones look at Scenes From A Memory as well as Six Degrees of Turbulence (minus The Glass Prison and The Great Debate, where a Dual Recto was used).

A TriAxis would be a good solution, though it will not sound exactly like a Mark, or a Rectifier for that matter (even if it's supposed to recreate those sounds), it will get you close to that kind of tone. Plus it's a good solution to save some space, you'll have 90 different sounds which you set which way you wish! And you have the ability to go stereo with a effects unit (left and right). A TriAxis + a power amp will be pretty expensive in Europe, though, mind that. Here, a TriAxis + 2:90 is at 50 000 NOK, which is almost $10 000! Not counting the cabinets!

I personally like Marks more than Rectifiers, though I've never owned a Recto, I've tried a few on several occasions, and while they also sound good, they are too much loose and scooped for my taste. I like the midgained, growly Mark tone I get out of my IIC+ much more. But that's just preference. You should try all and see which you like the most! Collect some good settings from these boards, and go over to your nearest store..

Yes, I know. But the question at the beginning of the thread is about what John used on G3 in Tokyo.

actually there was no particular G3 requested. The word "tokyo" does not appear in the original question:

"What is John Petrucci's gear on G3?
Thanks
"
