Trying to figure out what pedal to get for my Lonestar. I like the drive channel of the lonestar, so I'm wondering if having the Jekyll portion of the pedal is worth getting. Would using the Jekyll give the same kind of sound as using Channel 2 on the "clean" setting, where it's just clipping? I definitely like the sound of the Hyde for the distortion, but I'm wondering how much use the Jekyll is to me with a Lonestar. What do you guys think? The J&H is big looking, so going Son Of is attractive on that front alone. Do you guys use tube screamers (modded or otherwise) or Xotic BB's...cuz that's what the Jekyll portion is supposed to replicate...just wondering if it'd be useless to me. Thanks a million!

Here's what I can tell you given my experience with visual sound products. I have used a J and H but own a Route 66 which is essentially the Jekyll (tube screamer) side plus a compressor. Review: After messing with the thing for a long time I concluded that I didn't like it stock at all. Maybe the issue is, with a boogie that is already heavy in the mids, adding more seems like overkill (and you are going to get a big mid hump with any screamer type clone). The Hyde side may be helpful for a time when you needed a more modern sound, but honestly I wasn't impressed enough with what I heard to jump on it. I know there are some big names that use this pedal and all, but for me, it just didn't cut it. What I ended up doing was deciding that, since I didn't like the Route 66 stock at all, I was either going to sell it, throw it out, or try to have one of the people out there who mod pedals work on it. I did that and ended up doing a "vodka mod" by this guy in CA. It improved the thing...some...but not enough to make it into my signal chain. Right now I go straight into the amp and between the two channels, the solo boost on my amp and the controls on my guitar, I have everything I need and then some. It just didn't seem to make sense to plug in a box, just because I have it. I own a lot of stomp boxes, including an original tubescreamer which sounds better then the VS and just needs a new switch.

So...here is my suggestion: If you really want another distortion sound for this amp, go with something different like a Klon or one of the Keely products. I wouldn't really bother with this thing. It may sound good with other amps (in fact it does sound better with my old Fenders), but not all that great with a LS.

Hmmm...I was under the impression that the tube screamer and Jekyll were lacking mids. Maybe I'll just get the Son of Hyde. The only other distortion pedals that did anything for me were the Keely DS-1 Mod, Keeley SD-1 Mod, and the Wampler Pinnacle II.

Polishcomedy , TS boost the mids and cut bass , that's the point of this pedal , wich it's great to cut in the mix . People use them in to main ways . First it's a la SRV : gain 0 and level max ( he used like that with some break-up in the amp ) , when the amp it's clean the gain goes around 11-2 . I think that the TS works great with this amp , in both channels , and any other type on TS like the BB from Xotic . In youtube you can find some clips of Andy Timmons showing his LSC with both pedals ( TS and BB ) , and to my ears they don't sound muddy at all .
