A friend of mine that jams with me regularly asked me to learn "Seasons In the Abyss". I really like this style and sound. It's a bit quirky like Tool, etc. I was into Slayer many many moons ago. I have "Reign in Blood" on cassette tape! Anyway, I don't really dig alot of the stuff they play on Headbanger's Ball these days. The music seems to be more about how fast they band can play, and I don't care for most of the vocals. Based the Slayer tune I mentioned can someone make a suggestion of other stuff to listen to and learn. I like Tool, Godsmack, Disturbed, Black Sabbath, and so on.. I might add I do not play at blistering speed. Fire away - where do I go from here? I've only been into playing Metal or Hard Rock (again) for a few months.

Not at all related but if you're into tool you seem to like progressive hard rock/metal type stuff, check out Opeth.

Also check out Meshuggah if you want balls to the wall technical insanity.

Slayer is ok.. their style seems to be to squeeze as many notes into their solos as possible without any feeling to them at all.. I've seen them 3 times live and genuinely get bored and leave eventually because it's the same thing after awhile.

Hmm.. There's just way too many sub-genres of metal now. Try listening to Into Eternity. They're somewhere inbetween progressive metal and death metal.

Great, thanks for the suggestions. I might add that I often dislike "players music", but do have major respect for it. I do not thrive on technical insanity by any means. I actually have blues roots. You won't catch me listening to Steve Vai or Paul Gilbert for example. That's why I mentioned I don't play particularly fast. I like a good heavy rhythm with tasteful leads/solos that are learnable note for note should I elect to take them on. I love early Metallica, but usually choose a tune to learn based on the solos (or lack there of) and their degree of difficulty.

Try getting some Corrosion of Conformity. They're more hard rock than metal. Although, their newest album is pretty metal if you ask me. You can't find much of them online so I suggest going to Newbury Comics and picking up In the Arms of God, their newest album.

I hear ya, but over the years they have developed a few solid gems in their repertoire! I am going to see them this Summer so we shall see. I love their cover of Judas Priest's "Dissident Agressor".

Check out Slipknot and Mudvayne. I'm betting your age is about that liked Slayer back in the day like me. :D They are downtuned like crazy but I still really like them.

It's the vocals on HBB that I can't stand anymore. Two much growling. If that doesn't bother you Lamb of God or Gojira might be right up your alley. I love the driving guitars but GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, DEATH, GRRRRRRRRRRRR, BLOOD, GRRGRRRGRRRGRR, IN MY SOOOOOOOUUULLLLLLLLL... not my thing.

I'll still take it over country music though. Anyday

I completely forgot about Mastodon. You should check them out. They have toured with Slayer sometime recently.

And they TOTALLY stole the show the two times I saw them open for Slayer.. it was a total hijack.

I've never seen anyone get that kind of tone out of the gibson guitars they use, absolutely awesome.

I know.. I love JMP's. They're just usually not used for metal. But I suppose with a nice distortion or overdrive pedal.

Back in the day that's all anyone used. Then they started hotrodding them with mods doing just about everything. The Jose Arrendondo mod was a good high gain mod for a JMP. There are still guys modding them. There are also still guys using them for metal too. This is even without a pedal.

Play one. That is about all you need to do. They really are great amps but they are hella loud. If you like that sound, get a JMP with a PPI master so that you can have it at tolerable levels. If you can't afford that get a 2203 or 2204 JMP or even a JCM800 version. They all do that sound very well. I know it isn't the same thing but have you seen the Kerry King sig?
