I've noticed in most amps there are 2 big transformers the power transformer and the output transformer, but I also see a smaller silver one and i'm curious as to what this one is for. Here's an old pic of my 2:100 (i've fixed the resistor so there's no need to comment on it if you don't mind.)

The small silver one in the middle is the one I'm asking about.

Is this the choke? Also what is the purpose of it?
 
The choke usually goes after the rectifiers to help get rid of any excess ripple on the DC line. Why do you want to know so bad anyway? You're getting a bit more involed electronically. It'd take a bit to expalin AC-DC converstion, ripple and power supply noise.
