Fellow forumites,

3 questions, if I may....

Has anyone used GT12AX7M's and what do you think of them? I bought my MKIV with them in V1-V5 and while I like them, I'd be interested in other user's opinions....

What's a good 12AT7 for the same amp?

Anyone used GT6L6R's (aren't they just Sovtek 5881's?????)? I hear the word 'cardboard' used to describe them, but eBay has a few #4's going at the mo - maybe that's why though!

The thoughts of the team are respectfully requested.

I purchased a GT12ax7-m a while back to put in the v1 spot of my ROV and although I enjoyed the sound of it,,, it went microphonic on me in about a month. This is the only tube to do that to me so far. I think only a month of use is a bit too short. I have read in the past somewhere that using long plate tubes in combos is not good for the tube. If I remember correctly the article said that long plate constructed tubes are structually weaker than short plated tubes....

I've used this tube on my DR's V1. It takes the fizz out of the top end and makes the amp more musical. I've also used the JJ ECC803 as well almost as cool but not as dynamic. I've never had a GT 12AX7M go out or go microphonic on me. Also try a JAN 5751 for a similar effect in V1.

Hey I doubted my memory there for a minute and found where I read about the long plates not the best in combos,,, I dont really care what people want to use one way or another, I just thought that my
GT12AX7-M long plate in v1 going out after a month was quite coinsidental. This is from bob at eurotubes. Read the discriptions on the first 2 tubes,,, He mentioned combos,,, not heads.

This is great feedback guys - much appreciated.

Does anyone have any more thoughts about the GT6L6R and 12AT7 questions though?

I currently have a JAN Phillips, EH, and GT 12AT7. Being that it is just a reverb driver in a Mark IV and I don't use my reverb that much I can't tell you what I like best.

On the GT's does it say R1, R2 or R3? the AT7 is about 50% gain of your standard AX7.

R1 = Sovtek
R2 = Svetlana
R3 = =C=

None of the above.

IT has GT6L6R and underneath says (aka GT6L6B)

THey look exactly the same as the Sovtek 5881WXT's that I have lying around, so that's probably it.
