I just wanted to let everyone know (if they don't know already) that Monsta-Tone (Andy) is an A+ seller and a helluva nice guy. I just bought a DC-10 head from him and it was in beautiful shape and well packed. Thanks again Andy!! :D :D :D

Let me know what you think of that amp compared to your Mark IV. I'm thinking of changing amps (again)... and thought about either going back to a Mark IV or giving the DC series a try - or just upgrading to a Stiletto Deuce head and cab.

You do still have the Mark IV right?

Musicman, I can't believe you're GASing already for a new amp. You just got the Stiletto and thought it was God's gift to amps! What gives?

Hehe... so is the way of GAS...

But really I think it's because i've been messing with different tubes and things recently (with mixed results) and need to get back to the basics (i.e. stock tubes) and stop visiting this bloody forum!

Yo Adam!

Nope, I sold the MKIV and the Express heads about a month or so ago. The MKIV was making me nuts with it "never sounding the same way twice" and the endless tweaking, options etc. Nonetheless, I still think that it is a fabulous amp. The Express was outstanding clean and very good on crunch, but just didn't cut it on the blues/burn channel, regardless of what pedal I used. Soooo, I sold both and picked up a DC-10 from Andy (Monsta-Tone). So far (two weeks into it), I really like it. To my blown out ears, the cleans are much warmer than the MKIV's and the overdrive channel is about 90% compared to the MKIV's, but not as tight. Getting it to do the "low gain" is tough, but Andy gave me a few tube swap ideas. I may just invest in a BB Preamp for those type of sounds or use my Seymour Duncan Twin Tube on the clean channel. I can say this about the DC-10 - it is freaking LOUD!!!!!!! Again, Andy suggested that I consider a Triode/Pentode switch or a Cathode/Fixed Bias switch to lower the output. I think that the later DC amps had 60/100 switches on them stock (at least based on the manual that I downloaded). I guess to put it in a nutshell, the DC-10 seems to have the best DNA of the MKIV, with a clean Fenderish chime like I found on the Heartbreaker's clean.

Prior to the DC-10, I had picked a mint condition 2007 Marshall TSL100 head which lasted about three weeks, until I came across JCM800 4210 combo from the guy who sold me the TSL. I'll pick up the JCM800 tomorrow and swap him the TSL. Heck, I've been drooling over owning a JCM 800 since high school (break out the hairspray and spandex, cue up Iron Maiden)

I would give the DC series a test drive before you return to the MKIV (and that is not knocking the MKIV). Andy did mention to me that the DC-5 is not as clean as the DC-5 (i.e. less headroom and earlier break-up). I found this to be true when I briefly had a DC-5 combo (my very first Boogie), which was why I sold it.

Also, I had asked Andy to compare the DC series to the MKIV (he owned both) and here's what he said.......

" This is based on a shootout between my DC-10 & Mark IV A.

Cleans:
Mark IV - sterile, not enough bass
DC-10 - Very close to my Twin II, but with a little more sparkle and less bass

Reverb:
Mark IV - Not much there, very fast decay and very fast repeats
DC-10 - Very full with longer delay times. Not as lush as the LSS or my Twin II, but very nice

EQ:
Mark IV - not very powerful, but did have a lot of control over tones
DC-10 - Extremely versatile, but more present than the Mark IV. I actually use it for a lead boost and boost the volume and frequencies that I want for solos

Distortion:
Mark IV - R2 - I hated R2. I could only seem to get Rolling Stones tones, which I love, but it felt sterile
Mark IV Lead - Great tones, but too "Tweaky," if that makes sense. I never seemed to be able to dial in the same tone twice, using the same guitar, cable, cab, exact placement, etc.

DC-10 - Very easy to dial in. I used it in a Country band with the gain on 3 and it was sweet and crunchy.
With the same settings, but gain on 6, you can do any classic rock tone you want by adjusting the treble, bass, mid, and your guitar's volume.
Gain on 7 is Santana territory.
Gain on 9 is metal-ville or late 90's Santana depending on guitar and tone stack settings.

All in all, here is how I see the DC's:
DC-2 - Great practice at home amp but no EQ. Contour only works on lead channel.

DC-3 - Great blues & classic rock amp. More Marshall tones than Mesa. Not much clean headroom, so bluesy cleans are all you will get without a Thiele. Great ZZ Top to Santana distortions. EQ needs a little tweaking to make it more effective. Really hard to install a bias pot without re-working the circuit.

DC-5 - Great blues & classic rock amp. A little darker than the others. Very little clean headroom, so loud cleans are hard to achieve. Distortions are fat, anything from Dire Straits (Money for Nothin') to Santana to metal. EQ works very well. Reverb not as strong as the DC-10.

DC-10 - The best of the bunch. Deep reverb, seriously sweet cleans. EQ works the best on this one too. The DC-10 also has the deepest bass of all of them. In my opinion, it is far superior to the others.

At one time, I owned a DC-10 combo, Roadster head and Mark IV combo. I chose the DC-10 over all of them because I felt like it was superior in every way. Easy to dial in, very stable as far as getting the same tones each time, great sounding and it seemed to like tube changes the most."

Good luck and happy GASSSSing! 8)

I concur that he's been really helpful and a real nice guy. I just bought his DC-10 combo off of him. Can't wait for it to come!

Thanks for that awesome info Matt! It sounds like a DC-10 would be killer! I'll keep my eyes peeled for one. I've been messing with my Stiletto some more (installed a Tung Sol in V1 and it sounds mUCH better) so i'm not so eager to get rid of it now, but a DC-10 may very well be my next Mesa if the Stiletto doesn't keep me occupied!

Later tater... :D

Hey thanks Matt!

I really didn't want to sell either one, but I need to get another vehicle and it's Christmas too.

Glad you like it!

So far, the DC-10 is tied with the Tremoverb and Soldano Lucky 13 as my all time favorite amps.

As soon as the Money Order comes in Ryan, I'll get it out to you. I have to find a big enough box too! This thing is huge when you get it all packed up.

Monsta-tone,
what are the similarities/differences you see between the DC-10 and the Heartbreaker?
Thank you.

Not sure if I can give an accurate comparison since my HB is seriously modded!

The DC-10 has some really nice cleans, but they are a bit shrill and harsh when compared to an actual Fender Twin Reverb.
The clean channel is much more versatile than the Twin though since there is a Gain and Master, and the Pull Boost makes it break up very nicely.
The distortion channel is all Santana if you turn every knob to 7 (it's really loud like this!!!!!!!!).

The HB is a great classic rock amp.
Both channels can be clean or distorted, so you can have 2 cleans or 2 distortions or 1 of each.
There are tons of choices with all of the power amp and power supply options.

Here is what I currently use:

DC-10:
Better Reverb mod
Bias Pot
New filter caps

Heartbreaker:
Better Reverb mod
Better Cleans mod
SLO mod for Lust channel
Master Volume Bypass mod for Love channel
Solo Boost mod

I would have to say that the HB is a really incredible amp after the SLO mod! It doesn't have the gain that the DC does, but it is very present and you can hear every note in a highly distorted chord.

If I had to sell one, it would be the DC. Hope it never comes to that!!!!!!!

I'm with you! My Heartbreaker will be the last to leave my premises!

Even unmodded, with NOS preamp tubes and the right cab, it rocks. And with an Eminence Governor loaded cab, it will do metal, too!

I just traded my Express for a DC-10 head with a board member and agree with a previous post. The DC sounds awesome!!!! Really versatile with sweet cleans. The EQ is the key. My Express' contour knob was nothing compared to the DC's EQ. It can get really heavy too.

Might wanna send him a PM - he might not catch this thread...

Thank you, MusicManJP6.
You are right; I should have started a new thread "DC-10 or Heartbreaker?" in the proper forum.

Luckily, Monsta-Tone seems to be always ready and keep his eyes on the ball.
Thank you, Monsta-Tone.

Let me tell you that I was undecided between a DC-5 and a DC-10. As I already have a HB, I made up my mind and have just bought a DC-5. It is a version B, following your precious advice.
Best regards
Daniel

Hello All,

Thanks to this board, I have a newly modded Heartbreaker from Andy's shop. I thought it was only fair to follow-up with my feelings about the new amp since what I read here prompted me to pull the trigger. I had been debating for a long time getting the amp modded to increase the gain while sweetening the cleans when I came across this thread. Generally, I wanted a high volume, really nice two-channel live amp that had more distortion in the Lust channel while the Love channel remained the same. I debated selling it and buying something else but wasn't satisfied for the amount of money it was going for presently and the mods you guys had been talking about seemed like a reasonable investment. After quite a bit of discussion (maybe about an hour straight and a few long e-mails - Andy was happy to talk shop and really open and accommodating when discussing what I wanted), the changes I asked Andy for were:

- Soldano Mod (which effectively removed the low gain/high gain functionality for both channels but added a gain stage to the lust channel - ask Andy for details)
- Better Reverb
- Bias pot Incl. Bias Pot & Biasing (installed near power tubes)
- Midrange Switch (5-way), foot switchable (drilled a new hole for footswitch and 5 way rotary in the back)
- Master Volume Defeat Switch on the Love channel (replaced the boost switch on this channel and essentailly, removed the master volume from this channel)

He was also able to:
- add a bright switch for both channels (which replaced the low/high gain switches on both channels)
- make the trim/fat work for the new modes all the time

While it was in New Mexico, he also did a general clean up/inspection of the circuit and retensioned the tube sockets while biasing it for 6v6s. He also threw in a 2-button footswitch to control the channel switching and new mid range boost. The LED for the mid-boost isn't functional when in tweed power mode (not enough voltage to power it) but works in full voltage mode when using 6L6s or EL34s. Something worth noting here - Andy had to make permanent mods to do a lot of this if it wasn't evident from the above. As far as I was concerned, the mods were worth more to me than any potential devaluation (which is merely second guessing, at best).

Well, how does it sound? The Love Channel sounds the same when the master defeat is off. When turned on, it really becomes a bit more sweet. You'd have to work to balance it out a bit with the Lust channels volume (which is now a bit changed since the new gain settings make it much more compressed), but the Master volume all the way to right makes this work out fine. The Love channel has much more gain... the most I could manage before was a Thin Lizzy kind of tone but now can actually do more metal type sounds -Judas Priest and early Van Halen kind of tones. It now is much more reactive, harmonically rich and less fizzy (in part because of the biasing, I would think). It just crunches; it's not going to do the Recto thing but it reminds me a lot of the gain I get from my Eganter Rebel (maybe slightly less). It doesn't clean up completely anymore, but you can get a nice bluesy mellow tone if you roll back the treble and volume while pumping the master on this channel. It's worth noting here that the treble control is dramatically changed after this. I tend to use it more in the half to all the way up which dumps extra gain into the channel in a usable way with the bright switch. Andy indicated that this is because the mid-boost switch is in that section. Speaking of, I find this to be a more usable option than a boost (but Andy can do that, too if you'd like). It adds a new palate of tones and is footswitchable if you want to go to soloing. It only works with the fat switch engaged and becomes more pronounced as the treble is increased so it takes experimenting to find the desired mid boost sound. It is also worth noting the presence was changed in responsiveness (but that's okay, because it was always harsh anyway IMO). Oh, and reverb is much wetter... perhaps even too wet at most settings but it's nice to have the option rather than before when even maxxed it wasn't quite enough to do surf (and now, it definitely can get there). Lastly, you now need to bias the amp when you switch tubes. Still, worthwhile considering that biasing it hotter made it sound much clearer and richer, IMO.

Andy was really awesome in his communications... constantly let me know where the amp was at proactively, if there were any hiccups (for example, I originally wanted one option that didn't work out) he called right away. He even sold me some 6v6s for the amp. An altogether awesome transaction and I'm quite proud of the new amp and its sounds. I highly recommend him if you're looking for a cost-effective and nice sounding way to fix up your Mesa Boogie Heartbreaker. Thanks to everyone here for hooking me up!

:D Damn dude! I feel like I should be paying you to be my publicist! :D

Glad you like the amp. It was my pleasure turning your mild mannered Heartbreaker into a ballbreaker!
 I might have to come up with a great silk screen that changes the Heartbreaker to 'Ballbreaker!'

I liked the Soldano mod so much on your amp that I had to do it to mine too! My poor DC-10 just sits in the corner now looking at me with jealous eyes!
