is it possible? I've found a rectoverb with EL34s on ebay for a resonable price, but I'm worried it won't be good for my AC/DC, Jimi, Thin Lizzy etc. Anyone comment on that?

Well, in all honesty, a Rectifier isn't going to sound quite like a Marshall. EL34s will give the characteristic Rectifier sound more mid grind (with less low end) and probably a bit more bite, but it's not going to be quite the same as a good ol' cranked vintage Marshall.

+1.. If you want to play an old school Marshall sound, just get a Marshall. Or maybe a stiletto? The closest you'll get on a rectoverb is juicing the gain on the "pushed" mode with EL34s, and maybe a gain boost too. Not a bad sound by any means, but perhaps not what you're after.

You'll never get a Marshall sound from a Mesa, unless you get a Stiletto. Even with EL34s, the amp still retains it's voicing, only you get more mids. Rectos are voiced to have lots of low mids, high lows, where Marshalls are voiced in the high mids. To change the voicing of the amp, you would have to do some serious modding. May as well buy a new amp at that point.

My suggestion? Run an MXR 10-band eq in the loop and boost the 500 htz slider a smidge, then the 1-4k sliders a little more. You can drop some of the low frequencies a little, too. Tweak your tone knobs from 12:00 as usual. This will give you the upper mids boost you get from a Marshall/Laney vs. Mesa. Common sense would dictate to run this combo in vintage mode, but I prefer dialing the gain way back and running modern mode.

how about using pedals out front. I got a couple of Marshall pedals - could I use them for Marshall tones, and flip off for that creamy Mesa roar, or if I buy this recto am I f@cked? I'd imagine the pushed channel would work for Jimi, AC/DC etc... maybe I'll take a trip to see it.
