Alright i got a Marshall 1960AV, for a sick deal.

My Mk III is sounding good with the V30's, but they don't seem as aggresive/raw as the greenbacks.

I feel the GB'S have more character to them.

I feel the V30's are maybe a little bit cleaner/articulate in some ways?

I think i prefer the GB bottom end cause it sounds meaner to my ears.

The V30's sounded a little tighter to my ears, but i still prefered the GB

Anyway, I got g12-h30's on the way.

Anything I'll miss out on that the V30 provides that the g12h30 doesn't?

I wasn't going to play with the V30's themselves.

But i was thinking of "MAYBE" going (2)g12h30/(2)v30's.

I'm thinking I should stick to my original plan. 4gb/4g12h30

Anyone have opinions/suggestions about this?

Yeah its a matter of preference between a Greenback and Vintage 30s. Some amp sound better with Vintage 30s while other sound better with Greenbacks.

From what I read, a G12H30 is something between a Vintage 30 and a Greenback, somewhere in-between these two.

I heard that G12H30 / Vintage 30 combination is great. Some boutique amps has this combination.

Greenback distort early have strong midrange and weak bass tend to get muddy if driven too hard.

V30's have a smoother sound tighter bass and a strong upper midrange hump that makes for a good lead tone with distortion.

G12H30 are more articulate, strong bass, clearer highs, slightly scooped middle. Great for crunch rhythm and heavy metal over drive.

I prefer the clones of the old pre-rola G12M and G12H speakers then the Celestion reissues from Scumbag amps [Southbay Amps] for my Marshall amps. Celestion speakers go with Marshall amps and if English type tone is what your after you'll find it here.

Boogie tone is associated with American speakers EVM12L, JBL, Altec Lansing. I happen to think the Fane 100 watt alnico sounds more American and works Great with my MKIIC+.

Like you said, it's a matter of taste. :)

I'm sorry the combination of V30's and GB's didn't work out. I have always liked the more aggressive nature of the GB's combined with the modern sound of the V30's. With my Dual Rectifier, it kinda defines where I want my sound to go.

I've never tried the G12H30. But I hope the GB/G12H combination works out better for you.

with my MarkIV Head, i've got a Marshall 4x12 1960 Vintage with 2 V30's on top and 2 G12H-30 at the bottom, plus a Recto 2x12 horizontal (with the V30's wich are specially made for Mesa by Celestion, with some little technical differences with the V30's normal production), i don't know if it's the different cabinet construction or whatever, but the sound of the MarkIV is really better with the Recto 2x12, even if it's very good with the Marshall, the Recto definitely has the magic !!!

If you're interested in how the specially voiced Celestion V30's for Mesa are, look here :

I have this combination in a Mesa 2X12 cab and it sounds VERY cool!! I just use it for clean though, as I don't wanna blow them out!!

I also have this combination of speakers in a TopHat that sounds VERY "shimmery"... a'la U2's The Edge...

I love 'em!!!

But as mentioned, it's a matter of taste....

actually i havent gotten to try the V30's with GB's just yet. Im getting the V30 marshall cab tomorrow. Im just thinkin the V30's will dominate in volume and drown out the GB's.

Ive pretty much heard ill **** myself when i put the g12h30's in there cause they have all the nice qualities of both speakers. I actually got some Hellatone 30's from avatar.

So the bass is going to be nicer .. the overall speaker is : )

ive only heard my GBS get slightly muddy bass at high volume but not that much. I think it has a pretty aggresive sound. oh well once i get 8 speakers all going at once im sure it will sound bigger/tighter everywhere

Sorry for the double post but basically these are the combination choices i have while using two 4x12 cabinets (half stack or side by side)

4x12 - (4) GB's & 4x12 - (4) g12-h30's
___________
OR
____________

4x12 - (4) GB's & 4x12 - (2) V30's / (2) h30's speaker combination

This is more for live purposes then anything. Im sure ill be using GB's to record.

So it boils down to those 2 combinations of a fullstack

I don't really notice that to be the case at all. If you get really loud you'll lose a little of the nastiness of the Greenbacks, but otherwise they really do balance fairly well.
