I seem to be having feedback issues with my amp which I'm pretty sure is not normal. When playing on the gain channel of the amp, I get feedback whenever I stop playing and take my hand off of the strings of the guitar.

This happends regardless of the type of guitar, it can be a Les Paul to a strat to a Music Man or whatever.

I make sure to stand away from the amp when playing the guitar, and I am not using any pedals. Simply playing the guitar into the amp direct.

All the tubes on this amp are Mesa tubes except the EL34's which are a matched pair of Tung-Sol. Could this be the problem? Maybe these tubes are too much for this amp?

Any advice?

Microphonic tubes is always a possibility, but I choose these tubes spacifically because the tubes were very highly rated not to be microphonic.

Gain settings, perhaps?? I sometimes sit on the floor right in front of mine with no issues, even w/ my 355. BTW I'm running Tung Sols as well. Good Luck...

check the grounding screw. I have taken my chasis out before to mess with the tubes and forgot to screw the grounding screw back in. WOW what a difference. I was getting way too much feedback. Also, are you playing with the loop on hard bypass or in? Only reason I ask is because i had a feedback problem with the stiletto ACE 2x12 combo (which is what am using) with higher gain stuff for awhile until i learned how to dial the amp in better. Try these settings for high gain:

Loop on hard bypass
Fluid Mode
gain - 12:00
treble - 10:00
mid - 1:00
bass - Almost 4:00
pres - Just past 11:00
master - 9:00 - 10:00
diode mode

I play a lot of metal and some punk influenced rhythms. These setting seem to work very well..i mean there is always going to be "idolling noise" with high gain. But these should not feedback uncontrolably.

Hi Stonge,

Thanks for the advice. Can you please tell me what a grounding screw is and where it is located on the amp. I'd like to see if that is the problem.

I am also using a mesa Stiletto Ace combo.

sorry about the length of time between responses (holidays ya know).
anyways..the grounding screw if behind the power tubes if you are looking at it from the back. feeling around in there you'll find it! lol.
I am really pleased with this amp. I think it is still very under rated. Especially with the Electo-Dyne coming out, it really seems to steal all of the stilettos glory. Good for me, they are still so **** cheap on the BAy.
Only thing I think they shoud of done was 2 things:
1..put reverb or trem on it and
2..make the thing switchable to 6L6s. much like the Electro-Dyne.
Other than that I love the way this thing is voiced.
Try it with a 4x12 loaded with 4 EVs..you'll never go back!!
Cheers

Skinuzzi - it would be cheap and easy to try some tube swapping. Grab a known good tube and go one at a time through the preamp tubes and see if one is microphonic. Just because tubes are rated "low microphonics" doesn't mean that they can't go bad or just be a bum tube from the beginning. Doing a quick game of tube swapping might solve your problem and if it doesn't, it might save a tech some time troubleshooting.

Good luck to you.

Mark III,

Thanks for the advice. I will try and so exactly that. I'm almost 99% sure that is the problem. Just to locate which tube it would be. Unfortunatly the Stiletto's design doesn't make changing the tubes very easy for someone with big hands. Especially the tubes in back of the fan!

I will post some news once I get er done!

Thanks
