Dual Rectifier price

Hi everybody, I've been around the Randall forum for a long time and now that I'm looking at rectifiers I thought I'd join. I've got a pricing question for you guys that see this amps a lot. Now I haven't seen the amp yet but from talking to the guy it sounds like the amp is an early 2000's 3 Channel dual rectifier. The amp doesn't work, he says the tubes are "acting up" and i'm not sure what that means yet. I'm assuming it's a power tube problem but i'll find out more today possibly. It doesn't have a foot switch but it's in pretty good shape. What would be a reasonable price to offer for this assuming I can't get it to fire up. Thanks for the help!

Don't be inheriting someone elses problems! If the amp won't work, he can have a tech inspect it before trying to sell the thing.

That's a good thought for sure but I figured there would be a not working price too. I guess if a transformer or something like that went bad it could get pricey.

Trannies do get expensive!!! You'll have to get the amp inspected if you want to purchase it. Taking it to a Mesa Certified Tech is probably the best course of action.

If you REALLY want to go this route,
My suggestion / advice:
offer $1,000 - (total cost of repairs + bench fee). I WOULD NOT buy an amp like that without getting it inspected, assuming you want a working amp in the end. You won't save money buying broken gear. Now, if you are a tech and you want to do a referb, open it up yourself and have a good look at it. But if you are a tech, you know this already.

I would offer him $700 MAX like it is and send it off myself. Cause at that price even if you have to replace the tranny it is still a good deal.

So I bought the amp this evening and i'll just give a quick rundown on what happend when I turned it on. When it was plugged in with the power switch turn on all 4 power tubes lit which was a promising thing, then when the standby switched was turn on the outside tube closest to the edge of the amp lit up like a light bulb and the amp quit. A small puff of smoke came from the base of the tube that flashed. I put in a new fuse and pulled the 2 outer tubes and fired it back up. It came alive and I got sound from it but I didn't leave it on longer than just to check all 3 channels. So from all my rambling does that just sound like a tube died? So far i've pulled the amp out and don't see anything obviously wrong.

I would start with a fresh set of power tubes and rectifier tubes.

Give the rec a fresh new set of power and preamp tubes and then check it out. Did you get it for the 600 you asked?

Honestly after the owner and I saw it pop and blow smoke I said......I think the best I can do is $500 and he was cool with that. The only downside is it doesn't have a foot switch, does anyone have a lead on a 5 button or an old one they'd like to sell, I've seen them on ebay occasionally. And it's missing the back bar but that i'm not worried about.....unless someone wants to sell one of those too. Thanks again you all!

Is not the first time I see people let go away good amps because they dont understand tube problems and they think is a dying amp. Lack of knowledge for ones good business for others. He's soon gonna cry when he hear the amp roaring. As for the footswitch, like you've said, they show up on ebay frequently.

Yeah, i'm definitely stoked about it! When I get it up and running i'm going to test it out against my Randall RM100 and whichever loses has to go. The wifey wasn't too happy to see me buy a second amp but she'll live for now. The only thing I'm fond of about my Randall is that I can get close to a boogie tone and a Marshall tone all within the same amp. Something about having a "Real" boogie is kind of nice though.

Hope you didnt burn up a screen grid resistor. Easy and cheap fix. But Id take the chasis out and give it a visual inspection before you turn it on again. Id also recommend having a tech check it out also.

I would imagine that would be the general consensus around here (as it should be.) The only thing is our other guy has a single rec and I'm hoping to not emulate his sound exactly. The dual rec seems pretty moldable when it comes to tone shaping. I've seen on other forums where haters disagree but that's what makes this stuff interesting.

Run a different model of guitar (Strat against Gibson) as well as different speakers and you should be fine. Also, if he's running 6L6 tube, you should run EL-34s.
