Hey duders, haven't been here in a while, but I recently picked up another Recto 4x12 and had some questions...
I've now got two Recto 4x12 cabs - the first I bought was from ~2005 or so, taurus vinyl, large track-lock casters, v30's, etc. The one I just picked up is a bit older; no idea of the year, but it's got Peavey-esque nubex tolex and smaller pull-out casters, but is otherwise identical, for the most part.
I bought the older one at a great price since it was a bit beat up, but I plan on re-tolexing it anyway. In taking it apart to strip the tolex out, though, I found some differences in the construction. Namely, the baffle the speakers are mounted to is apparently built straight into the cabinet. I cannot find a way to remove it - no visible screws, even once the tolex was stripped. That said, there's no real need to remove the baffle... the grillcloth is attached to a separate baffle-type piece that's attached to the speaker baffle via industrial strength velcro. I've never seen anything like this on the more modern, non-metal-grill cabinets.
Before I took the cabinet apart, it sounded smoother, deeper, and a bit 'bigger' than my newer 4x12. I'll have to do comparison clips after I've retolexed and assembled it, and I'm not sure if the difference in sound could be chalked up to the speakers being more worn-in, but the older cabinet definitely sounded better!
Does anyone know when this change occurred? I'm going to give Boogie a call tomorrow and see if they can tell me when each cabinet was actually made, based on the serial number, but I figured I'd ask here, as well!
