After trying out an Orange Tiny Terror i've decided to buy one and hook it up to an orange 1x12.

However i'd really like to use a stereo setup live and wondered how the DC-5 sounds compared with the lead and rhythm sounds i used to get from my Roadster.

I'm kind of looking to go from chimey crunch to more of a chug for rhythm and of course the fabled "creamy" lead sound :)

Only reason i ask is because i'm never going to find one around where i live. My local music shop has a fixation with Marshall MG practice combos and odd hybrid amps that sound like hayfever patients

I'm also considering a Mark III. What do you think?

Josh

The one thing I will offer about the MkIII is that you shouldn't consider it if volume is a concern for you. III's are loud and you can't get around it.

By your description, it sounds like you're looking for a recto as the Mark 3 and DC 5 aren't dark sounding amps. The mark 3 isn't buzzy of course like the Rectos can be but it's pretty bright. And the thing with the lead tones is that yes, the Mark 3 has nice sustain but it's not very compressed so a Recto to some people sounds way creamier in a case where a person equates cream with compression

So keep that in mind if you go for a DC or Mark 3. And as mentioned, the Mark 3 is a loud amp and really wont sound opened up until you're at about drum set volume.

Hmm...my DC-5 is one of the darkest sounding amps I've ever heard. In fact, that's always been the first word out of my mouth whenever I would describe the characteristics to someone.

Thanks for your input guys :D The volume thing isn't necessarily a problem for me. I'll likely only ever use the amp for live stuff and have a containment cab if i want to record it loud!

So i suppose from what's been said: the MkIII is much brighter than the DC-5?

I had thought about looking for a recto but to be honest it's that "fizz" on the last gain stage that i don't like about them. I figured if i want more gain than i can just stick something out front.

I personally don't find my MkIII bright, but I am also using mostly JJ tubes in both the pre and power sections. They tend to be quite "dark."

Don't rule out the .50 caliber +.

I've got a Mark III and a .50 cal+, and the .50 caliber is a darker, spongier sounding amp compared to the Mark, but still in the same ballpark. I actually prefer it to the Mark.

Think Corrosion Of Conformity. It pretty much nails that tone.

Hi guys just bought a DC-5 in pretty much MINT condition for £500. Couldn't resist! Will post clips as soon as she arrives :D

You won't be disappointed... it takes a bit of tweaking, not as much as the average Mark series beast, but at some point your jaw will end up on the floor. 8)

I own a DC-3 and have been surprised (happily) by the gritty-growly tones I've been getting out of it recently. My preferred genres are all types of metal sounds. I've been wondering if the Mark IV, which I was planning on getting, is actually any "better?" I actually have some similar questions . . .

• DC-3 or DC-5 for grittier, more aggeressive, growl?
• DC-series or Mark III for grittier, more aggeressive, growl?
• DC-series or Mark IV for grittier, more aggeressive, growl?
• Does the Mark IIC+ pwn all other Marks for grittier, more aggeressive, growl?

Thanks!
