Hello! im new to the board, and it thought this would be the best place to come to discuss my nightmare.

This is my Dc-5 head.

I purchased it off ebay around two years ago, and its been amazing. I havent had a problem with it since...untill today.

After i long warm-up today during band practice, i flicked on the standby switch and all was good. ( lead channel was selected and sounded great as usual)

Upon switching channels to clean i was greeted with a bit of a pop. (I understand this can be usual sometimes once in a while) but when i played through the clean channel i got a massive crunchy tone, like my lead channel had switched back over, and nothing like it should be, clean and warm.

I've checked my pull/boost wasnt locked in and that it was definietely on the clean channel.

The main problem is that there seems to be no gradually build in gain. If i have the gain on 1 to 3 nothing, but past 4 its as loud and crunchy as hell.

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid problem but im not that tech savy. i know the basics, but dont want to go screwing this up trying to fix it!!

Could anyone please point me in the right direction of what the problem could be, and what needs to be fixed....it would be hugely appriciated!!

Sounds like a preamp tube problem. The only preamps directly realated to the clean channel are V1 (which is shared with the lead channel) and V4, which is both the second and third gain stage of the clean channel. V6 which is the phase inverter could also have something to do with it. If you have a extra known good 12axt, I would start by replacing V1 and see what happens. If no luck with that then put your original V1 back in and replace V4 with the spare and see if that solves the problem. If it doesn't then try the spare in V6. I'll bet one of them will solve the problem.
