I am using a studio pre with a simul 395. What would happen if my 395 had EL34's or even KT88's??

Hi,

the problem with using el34's or kt88's in the 395 is tube clearence.
pretty much every el34 and kt88 would be too tall. you could do it.
but it would require a mod and you'd have to run without the top cover.

Also consider bias issues, of using the el34 vs 6l6gc. I'd take it to a good
amp tech or give mesa a call, they can mod it for you.

Thanks for the response. I knew about needing to change the fixed bias to be adjustable, and I knew about removing top cover because tubes were too tall. I was just hoping somebody had actually heard one of these babies with 8 EL34's singing in stereo!!! Would it be worth it?

You might want to try EH 6ca7's they fit in the 395 pretty good.
sounds good too. I still have the top cover on.

I use Tung Sol 6550's & EH 6ca7's in my Simul 395.
