Can I buy a new TriAxis online?

Mesa dealers are not allowed to sell online AFAIK. Your best bet is to go used because the new Triaxis LD1 Red sucks IMO.

Interesting...I was also considering a Mark IV head, since that's the tone I'm after. I already have a 20/20 power amp and 2x12 recto cab, so I figured the TriAxis was the way to go for me...thoughts?

The triaxis is a compromise. It sounds fine but you might not like being limited in settings (especially by not having the graphic eq). I have owned both and still have the Mark IV. I don't play hard rock or metal with a band so i can't comment on how they sound in the mix but i know i could get great sounds out of both.

For the cost of a used Triaxis you can buy a mark iv short head and get rid of the 20/20.

There is not a better option because they both sound similar but different.

Yeah I was actually considering dumping my ADA MP-1 and Mesa 20/20 for a Mark IV head...you think a Mark IV will sound good with just my 2x12? I only play and record at home in a 12'x12' room.

What's the difference between the short head and other Mark IV heads?

Thanks,
Mark

For playing at home i would recommend the Mark IV over the Triaxis + 20/20 because you can get the mark iv down to like 15 watts or less in class A and tweed (the max is 85 watts). The 20/20 is good but it will not have the big bottom end that the mark IV has nor will you have a lot of headroom incase you want to play loud and clean. I will say this though, the Triaxis and 20/20 is a very lightweight and versatile rig if you wanted a ton of sounds in the smallest package possible.

For just playing at home I would probably get rid of the 212 and go for a 112 EV Thiele and short head for a compact rig with a huge sound. I run my Mark IV with a verticle 212 halfback cab or a road ready EV Thiele. The real truth is if you can't turn up to medium levels (way above conversation levels) then any tube amp is probably not worth much. I use a modeling amp for low volume practice and really can't imagine using a 10-100 watt amp for home use only.

The short head is 19 inches, can be rack mounted, and it fits perfectly atop the thiele 112 cab. A mark IV is a mark IV so they all sound the same.

Hmmm...then why not just a Mark IV combo? It's got the same C90 speaker as the Thiele.

My basic goal is to get a "Petrucci"-like crunch for recording with my SM57 at home. I figured a TriAxis or Mark IV would be the best way to do it since that's what he uses (with a 4x12 recto cab, of course).

The digital rectifier tone in my GT-6 just isn't cutting it ;)

Both sound good so it's up to you. Combos are heavy but if that's what you want then go for it. BTW you should try to get the EV 12L with your Mark IV IMO.

Greg

Thanks for the advice...I'll probably end up with the Mark IV head and keep my 2x12 recto cab w/V30s, since I already own it, it's the same speakers that Petrucci uses, and that's the tone I'm after ;)

Looks like the Mark IV head is selling for $1900 new...I doubt the dealers negotiate prices, since Mesa probably fixes them all.

Thanks,
Mark

Why go new? You would have to wait a few months since they are special order and there are rumors that the short is no longer made. I suggest buying used so you can save $500 or so.

Hi guys, if anyone is interested in purchasing a used TriAxis, you can let me know, and i will be happy to answer any of your questions...it's a v.2 with phat mod.

I will also give brand new tubes for the gear with purchase.

Thanks,
Dave

I agree with everything that “disassembled” has already stated, pretty much the same route here.
Had both Mark IV and Tri/2:90, got rid of Tri/2:90. Had used a 4x12 cab for both setups.
Then got the idea to order the combo shell and transferred the guts, this turned out to be a mistake (heavy as hell). And missing the closed back speaker sound.
Next guts went back into the headshell and got a 2x12 and for me at this point and time have never been happier with sound and ease of moving things around.
