Cab question

I am looking to convert an old PA cabinet into a 112 guitar cabinet. It has a large opening alongside the speaker baffle, so It looks like the cab is going to be largely ported. I also have to find a speaker to handle the power..... What do you guys think is a good speaker to go with a roadster. It has to be able to handle at least 100 watts, and I'd like a tight low end. Should I leave the port open, or should I fashion a cover to bolt over the port? Remember, 1x12 cab. Does anyone use a 112 with the roadster?

I would keep the vents open because who WOULDNT want a ported cab? You'll basically have a poor man's Theile right?

I have a 200 watt EV in my 1x12 Mark IV combo and it sounds fantastic

That's basically what I'm looking at lol. Does the EVM sound good with rectos though? I know the Mark users all love them, but haven't seen the same hype on this part of the board. Also how does a ported cab sound when compared to a closed back?

I got two EVF EV's in my 2x12 recto.... but these speakers are moving a bit too much and the cab is not as loud as the other cabs in my rig.

I need a wire diagram for the 2x12 rectifier cab

It depends on the speaker, but I find my Thiele to be a bit looser on the low end than a sealed cab.

The trade off is that a Thiele doesn't sound boxy like a closed back 1x12 does because the sound emanates from two separate locations.

Still, all you really have to do is stick a rag in the port to see if you like it better with or without the port, so it's an easy experiment.

The one issue I have with EVM-12Ls is that they produce a lot of top end. It's not bright in a ragged Celestion kind of way... it's just very clear. I don't like bright speakers with Rectifiers because they don't roll off the high end like a V30 does.

Right now I am looking into some higher powered eminence speakers. EVs look like more than I want to spend on this project. Screaming, you sure are very knowledgeable about Mesa amps. Its nice to know they are people with experience willing to help those with less knowledge on the subject :wink:

So I pulled the speaker out of my combo, and proceeded to play both my amps through it. With both amps the speaker produced a sound like when one turns the presence of a recto into really high stages. Overall it sounded like flatulence. I believe a different speaker could make the speaker not have that gas sound, but I believe it will be better to just get a built-for-guitar 112. This was a fun, simple project though. Thanks for all of your help guys!
