Between The Buried And Me
which album?
I just popped in the self-titled album and there's less gain than I initially thought - a lot of the heaviness comes from the drop tuning and good engineering as far as keeping the bass guitar frequencies and lead guitar frequencies where they belong..
power chords sound very clear and harmonically rich . . . decent amount of mids for what was ( at least at the time when it came out) a pretty hard-hitting metalcore album . . .
I would definitely run EL34s to get those midrange harmonics (Groove Tubes E34L 30W would be my pick to get extra low end but Mesa factory EL34s would be ok). For the preamp, you could probably stick with factory Sovtek/EH tubes or use something like a Tung Sol reissue to get lots of clarity. I would not go JJ ECC83 - do dark and rounded - not enough attack.
As far as settings, I'm playing a Stiletto now so I can't give exact dial positions . . .
. . . but try keeping your gain below 12:00 and cranking the master. sounds kinda cliched since it's recommended a lot on this board but I'm not hearing a crazy amount of gain on that album. you need some decent power tube distortion to get that tone.
I would not recommend doing the typical metalcore mid-scoop either. keep your mids slightly lower than the bass - still strong in the mix.
sorry it's not much but it's a start in the right direction I hope. tube choice will definitely make a difference here, particularly the EL34 power section.
edit - just read your earlier post. Metal Matt has some great advice in there - good starting point for actual knob positions. unless you have a 1960V (vintage) cab, you have the Celestion G12-75T speakers instead of the V30s. they have a little more of a mid-scoop by nature so that only reinforces the need to run EL34-type tubes and reclaim some mids.
