I just want to add something, as I have now experienced using an OD through my dual rec at a jam session last week.

I have always found in the past that the gain stage on the amp always lacked just a little magic...

The SD-1 with just a little gain level used has made the amp everything I have always wanted to hear out of any amplifier.

SD-1 = STOKED!

Yeah man!

You dont need a hole butt load of output or gain from the pedal. Just a touch. just enough to enhance the feel and wake the amp up. And rectos....I cant play thru one without some kind of boost or OD anymore

Yeah for sure, I am interested to know, can anyone give an honest opinion on the comparison of a stock SD-1 vs a stock Maxon OD9 ???

Interested to know, as I can grab a cheap OD9 that is near new.

slightly different voicing in the mids. Both are cool. The key to finding the right OD for you is to buy used and flip em as you go. Or keep tham all for your collection.

The Maxon is a bit brighter. The Boss has more upper mid but it can still sound somewhat thick with the tone knob.

Modding can be a way to get a original sound. This mindset has resulted in many cool things. For example EVH's brown sound is a result of modding. Also I read somewhere that the Kink's guitarist used to make small cuts on his cab speakers to get more distortion out of them. ETC...

If you like stock that's fine. But don't judge others who don't!

Cool, well I now have both pedals, will try out the Maxon soon - they appear to be really solid pedals!

Have to say.... Can't beat the SD-1 at what it does for boosting the preamp stage.

And I cannot believe people consider the Maxon to be somewhat "transparent" I guess some people are rather tone deaf after all.... Bit like comparing a Gibson to an Epiphone, but that is a whole other story! :p

Just traded a DS-1 for an SD-1 because the former had too much distortion for my purposes. Everybody kept telling me that an overdrive will suit my purposes better, which it has initially. I'll put the pedal through the paces and see if I'm happy with the tone or not. If I'm not quite content, then I'll send it to Keeley or Analogman. I did have an Analogman Modded SD-1 a few years back that I used with a Fender Blues Junior. The pedal was fairly quiet and dynamic - we'll see how the stock one compares as I've actually never played a stock one.

I don't think a modded anything is necessarily better than stock anymore than I think a modded Marshall is better than my stock Roadster. I'm not against modding though, as I generally "mod" any stock food item I buy from the store. I can't even eat a box of mac 'n cheese without modding it. Had a motorcycle that I modded up quite a bit as well. My motorcycle contained 35 more rear wheel horsepower than a stock one. However, the stock ones got better gas mileage. One the subjective side, I think mine sounded better. Anyway, that's enough rambling - time to play...

I really like my SD-1. It's bone stock and does exactly what I needed it for- light to medium gain settings.
