think i'm going to abandon the lead channel for a while, and only use the clean channel, heavily overdriven with boost and pedals, wide open, with the attenuator on it.

Ditto. For LOUD gigs I'd bump it up to the 30W mode. I'd be quite happy with a MkIV pre and the power section from a Subway Rocket.
