Hello,

I'm looking for good boogie lead tone. Know what i mean: not high-gain, warm, sustaining sound with lots of mids (I hate scooped mids). I don't care about clean channel. I want to buy mark IIb (60W/100W combo, no simul-class, eq, reverb, with celestion g12-h100 speaker) but people says that mark IIb lead "sounds like tin cans being dragged behind a car after a wedding.".

What do you think about lead in mark IIb and where can i find some sound samples of mark IIb on lead channel?

Nothing wrong with that tone, not sure if he's playing in the lead channel though. And its a IIa and not IIb.

The IIB sounds like just the thing you want. It has a really sweet, fat sustaining lead tone. Great cleans too. I really liked it when I tried one a few years ago. It was a vanilla version though. No options.

i had the MKIIB and it had a great lead sound specially when wound up a bit, it could sometimes sound abit sharp standing right in front of it but getting away from it abit it had a brilliant sound, it was the one with eq rev,and ev speaker so it would proberbly sounded a bit warmer with a celestion i had it for about 21 years and the only reason i got rid of it was for the mk4 that is more versatile for my needs :)

I have had my MKIIB since 1983 (original owner) and the amp will do what you are looking for. It has also been very reliable. It sounds much fuller as your turn it up and get the power tubes cooking and the speaker moving a bit. It sounds nice at lower volumes as well, but can sound a bit fizzy with single coils. It does work well with pedals, so you can tweek your od tones with a box of your choice.

You also can work many different types of tones if you actually move the knobs on your guitar. It is a responsive and tight sounding amp. Keep in mind that the age of these amps means you may notice a drop in bottom end (which may be what is making mine a bit fizzy) is it may be in need of a cap job.

I dont think it is a great metal amp, but it works great for blues and classic rock.

I like my 60 watt IIB sound to on the edge of breakup. It definitely will not get IIC+ metal creamy, it isn't supposed to....However, it does get a great pre-amp tube overdrive sound.
I agree with the above post the harder you push it the better it sounds.
Adjusting the gain of the clean channel does amazing things to the tone of the lead channel.
Somewhere in the IIB there's a tone your trying to get, better than many others but never the IIC+.
The IIB will humble many Two Rocks, and other boutique 6L6 amps for clean and grind. It'll hang with the best on the lead channel too.... :D

Still one of the best Boogie bargains out there...

guys, this cover of the old classic 'Highway Star' was just for fun, thought i'd post a link here, so you could check it out.

it uses an all original 1981 mesa boogie Mark 2B 60 watt head, typically into a 1x12 closed back cab with a greenback.

not trying to cop the original sound, this is my sound, just wanted you to hear something that's real familiar, for reference.

for this recording, i used groovetubes adapters to put the 6L6's to el84's.

i did all guitars and vox, xenophile did drums, bass, keys.
i mixed and mastered.

Vox: AT4033, thru a A Designs Audio MP-1 (class A mic pre) into a convertor, into sonar.

guitars: custom USACG cream strat (the one i posted here about a year ago), bill lawrence L-280s (solos) and L-500L (rhythm)

solos: my 1981 Mesa Boogie Mark2B 60 watt head but run thru my Demeter Iso cab, and a 57 on a Eminence Legend 122 speaker in it, which i've decided i do not like (the speaker), and i did some funky experiments with the eq on it, and this was the result.

Rhythms: open-air-mic up my Roland closed back 1x12 cab (with a greenback) , ADK Hamburg off axis, at about 2 feet away on the edge of the cone.

Recording DAW: it's Sonar 4, running on a PC, thru a Maudio 24/96 card, and this was the very first project i've done with it! (learning a new daw is kinda like chinese water torture)

Xenophile (an internet friend) asked if i was interested in a collaboration, i said 'sure'--
he programmed the bass and drums, and then played all the key parts, and then we mailed tracks back and forth...

last year, i put out a full length album, as a signed artist with indepenent label 'Planet Records'.

here's a link, to 3 full length tunes off the album....

the Mesa mark2b was used on all tracks.

i've got years of recording this Mesa Beast, if anyone wants to hear clean, bluesy or hard rock style soloing on the mark2b.

AYE, great playing mate! I enjoyed it. Never knew a 2B can sound like this. Cheers!
