I have an express 5:50 and was wondering how to get a better hard rock sound out of it.

Would you recommend an actual distortion pedal or running an OD pedal in front of the amp and on top of the crunch or burn settings?

Thanks.

i should mention that i would rather sound like the "vintage" setting on a dual rec rather than the "modern" setting.

A TS type of pedal would be nice, but they are "mid" boost type of pedals (as well as OD)... unless, of course, you get a modded one or one that specifies it has less mids. I personally like the added mids, some don't? The Xotic BB Preamp is a nice OD that'll barely push it, or slam the front end and get you in to the territory you are looking without much, if any, mid hump.... but it does compress it a bit. There's lots of really good OD's out there, see if you can borrow some to try out? Or, I hate endorsing them, buy a pedal from GC (Guitar Center), you get a 30 exchange guaranty there.... If you don't like it, take it back and try another one. The Fulltone OCD is another nice pedal.

I use a dual over drive pedal set up a ts-9 tube screamer( gain low/level maxed) as a clean mid boost into a keeley modded ds-1(set to kill lol) and run it up front of my mark 2/3s for a hard rock lead tone from hell...all the sound guys at my bands gigs love my amp/pedals tone(and guitarists lol) the bb pre amp is also good (a tad smoother)but the build quality is not as good.

John Landgraff L.O.D. in front of any amp! If thats too expensive $450...try a Suhr Shiba OD $200 it's pretty close! Here's my pedal board

The Maxon Od808 overdrive pedal should be more than enough to suit your needs my man
