I took a look in the back of my 5.25 today just to check that the tubes looked ok after a recent gig, and noticed what looked like a drip of varnish (?) running down the edge of the small transformer which is directly behing the 5W/Dyna-Watt toggle. Are transformers varnished or coated with something and is this something I should be concerned about?

Thanks.

Was it wet, tacky, sticky, freshly oozing varnish? Or was it hard, solid, and dry? I'd be concerned enough to call Mesa techs and ask about it if it is wet and gooey and pliable and fresh.

I have a bit of hardened varnish on my tranny. Doesn't drip. I crank the amp about twice a week. No weird smells or anything troublesome. Wouldn't say it's anything to worry about.

Yeah, most transformers are dipped in varnish or something similar for various reasons; we did it where I used to work and was told it's to insulate the wires to help keep them from rattling, I guess the heat generated can make them move a little bit or what have you.
