There is no cabinet sub forum, so since I use the Mk5 I'll post this here:

I'm thinking of getting a 4x12 for my club band. We have the potential to play outdoor festivals during the summer, but for the most part we'll be in bars and clubs. A 4x12, in terms of volume, is way overkill for small settings, however we as a band find that they make for cool backwalls. Anyways, my question is do half backs sound "better" than fully closed? Also, how do 200w EV12L's compare to V30's in terms of tone? Does a 200w speaker = more volume, or the ability of the speaker to handle higher amp watts?

a higher wattage speaker means it wont break from taking a high wattage load. but doesnt translate to louder.
the speaker sensitivity = loudness. so a 100db speaker will be louder than a 97db speaker. That is.. at say the manufacturers chosen test wattage... maybe 50 watts, the speaker will put out 100 DB or 97 or 86... the more effiecent the speaker the more DBs the louder.

a closed back will have more bass response than a half back, so "better" is subjective to you the listener...

where you located?

both my cabs are 600 watts and they dont have any volume diffrence compaired to say my other guitarist's 300 watt cab, BUT i do find when i have both my cabs hooked up it sounds a shitload fuller. Guess im kindda over doing it with a 90 watt head and 1200 watt cab situations lol

I absolutely HATE the MV with V30's, I don't think there is a worse speaker out there to match up with the Mark Five. The MV is a very bright amp and the V30's are a very bright speaker with lots of mids and treble. The combination is just awful.

I sold the V30's from my cab and put in 2 Eminence Canabis Rex's (a fairly dark speaker) and 2 Eminence Swamp Thangs (a tight punchy speaker with a chunky bottom end) and it is a GREAT match. IMHO the MV needs a darker speaker then the V30 as it was impossible to tame the mids and highs.

I've never played with the EV12's but they are supposed to be the bees knees.
