Maybe a silly question but is the 2x12 Rectifier cab(vertical) suitable for clean to bluesy rock playing? Or is the closed back with the V30 more suited for metal? Anyone here use this cab for anything other than metal?

I really like the cleans on a Mark V combo with the stock C90 speaker. Would I not be able to reproduce that sound with the 2x12?

Thanks!

Well, I had questions which were more or less similar on this post:

From my experience with V30s (in a Marshall 4X12 cab), they are perfectly able to handle a wide range of tones. You will certainly not get horrendous cleans and crunches with this speaker. I started this topic because I wanted to know if a C90 would give me cleans so much better than the V30 that it was worth going for a cab with both speakers in. It seems the difference is marginal.

One thing to bear in mind while watching clips comparing the same amp with different speakers is that it is likely the cab was switched but the amp's EQ was not adjusted for each speaker to give an objective comparison. In practice, one would tailor the amp's EQ according to the tone of each speaker.

I was thinking about this topic this morning as well. But my thoughts/hardware are different than what you are dealing with.

I have a Marshall 1960 4x12 loaded with two V30's and two Greenbacks. I opened up the back of the cabinet to help it sound open and better and have been playing with it for years now.

But I am thinking of removing the bottom speakers (Greenbacks) and closing off the holes. I am also thinking of sealing the back of the cabinet back up. This way I get a 2x12 cabinet that only weighs 75 lbs instead of 105 lbs and has the big box sound.

I also have a Marshall 1960AV 4x12 cabinet and I may remove two speakers from this cabinet as well. The 1960AV is loaded with 4 V30's. One cabinet at a time...

Having 2x12 speakers in a 4x12 cabinet would allow me to drive the cabinets a little harder which could be a good thing.

Anyone have any experience with putting insulation in a closed cabinet to help with the Marshall "boxy" sounding cabinets?

Yeah I had read that thread earlier.

"I like V30s for clean sounds. The C90s are brighter, clearer and can give a little more sparkle to the cleans while V30s are less bright and much warmer sounding. No sparkle but more buttery"

^^This was a comment that really worried me. I want my cleans to sparkle(think Fender chimey)

Exactly, I'm curious to know how Haggerty do their comparison. I bet they keep it on the same EQ setting.

In those videos I think I preferred the V30 overall. Even in the cleans. But I don't take it too seriously. What I know for a fact is that the cleans in the combo are absolutely GORGEOUS!! And I'm hoping that wont be lost in the 2x12 cab

I have a 3/4 back 2x12 with C90s and a horizontal Recto cab with V30s, and I prefer the Recto for just about everything. I can get the clean channel dialed in pretty close to the same tone that my DRRI has, so I think that you can get quite a bit of variety out of the V30s if you work with them a little bit.
