Here are some slightly better representations of what the Roadster sounds like.

I like the second clip better of those two.

Yup, same here, though it's a bit thin (though you'd never know it on those KRK's :( ) and has that scratchiness on the palm mutes - hopefully that's not inherent to the amp, guess I'll just have to get one and see for myself! :D

As far as preamp tubes go, you can can have a lot of fun mixing and matching different preamp tubes in different positions and they can have a pretty incredible impact on your tone. Hotter tubes can add a lot of crunch, where milder tubes can really eliminate a lot of high end fizz.

Marcus,

I've got Mullard ECC83's and Tung Sol ECC803 S Gold's in the Roadster. I've also got the opportunity to buy some NOS Mullards off of the store's amp repair guy. I'm definitely going to go for it and give them a shot.

Cool dude, why not! (provided you aren't spending an arm and a leg for snake oil, but only one way to find out! :D) And as for the bit about milder vs. hotter tubes for taming fizz, the Orange Tiny Terror I had came with a really wimpy preamp tube in V1 (like a 12AY7, I think), and while I suppose some might say there was less fizz, it was mainly cuz there was just less (meaning, not enough) gain/saturation, which doesn't really help! I figure there are so many tube options out there to experiment with, I really don't wanna go down that road and drive myself insane, so I'll just pick something that works and stick with it! :D

There's an incredible difference. I think the main thing is most people record clips at close to "bedroom" volumes. If you're not cranking up the amp, you're not going to hear much of a difference in power tube saturation....because there isn't any. I tend to find that the people who say they don't hear much of a difference aren't in bands. In a band situation when you've got the amp cranked up, the difference is incredible. Just different brands of the same type of tube will sound incredibly different. At least to me, power tubes are just as important as preamp tubes and have as much if not more effect on your tone than preamp tubes.

I know there's a huge difference. Look up the EL34 thread, and the clips that were in there by Metaltastic showed how there's supposedly not much of a difference between 6L6s and EL34s on recorded tone.

Yeah, my account inexplicably got deleted, so I made this new one - I'll repost the links to the audio files in that thread, but yeah, they were recorded at "just above painful in the room" levels, so the differences would probably increase at higher volumes!

Wait.. you guys kept the presence nob around 9 on channel 4 modern?

For those clips. My usual settings for channel 4 with EL34's are

Modern, 100 watts, Silicon Diodes

Presence 1 o'clock
Bass 6 o'clock
mids 11 o'clock
treble 1 o'clock
gain 1 o'clock

Haha, I've been on a role today. Got way over caffeinated and went on a posting spree. Bass on 6, or 1 o'clock

Yeah, that was my call (clearly mistaken) judging by suggestions in the manual - whoops! :D

Yeah it's a weird amp and voiced very different from a Dual Rec. I remember when I first got my Roadster I was pretty bummed. Then 15 min. later I brought the presence up and **** near pooped myself with glee.

On the Roadster for sure. On my old Dual Recs I used the run the presence pretty low and the treble pretty high...but then again I was running Les Pauls and PRS Singlecuts into a Recto 4x12 AND a 2x15.

Only a teenager would be dumb enough to haul all that **** to every gig

to my ear they sound very close to each other, yet, without drums and bass, roadster is a bit darker.
Slight difference not worth attention
