I had one of the old 4x12 slant cabinets with the half open back. It was loaded with C90's and EV12L's. I loved that thing. Keeping the bass control down under 3 will help. You can add the low end back in with the EQ and it doesn't get as flubby as the knob control.

I had a similar situation happen to me with the lead channel. After the last retube it is gone though. I changed my tube configuration and things are much better, inlcuding the tone :)

Just keep in mind also to not plug in a cabinet of lesser ohm rating than the jack you are plugging it in to. You can always go the other way though.

I have been happy with my Mark IV combo. The only thing that the V has that I wish mine had was the 10W option. Other than that it's not worth spending the money right now for me :)

Another good combination to try is the 6L6 in the inners and KT77 in the outers. I use JJ tubes that I get from Bob at Eurotubes and have always been very happy with them. The JJ KT77 is a little tighter than an EL34. The 77's have even a bit more low end extension and they have a nice sizzle...

+1 on swapping tubes to see if the problem follows the tube

Check the connections at both ends. I had a similar problem where when I switched to lead mode it made this strange oscillating sound. It turned out to be a couple of loose strands of wire from one lead were touching another one.
