I cant speak for a III...but I have run a number of different color pairs in my IV. I think you should be fine with a different color. I am pretty sure the color code relates to the bias rating of the tubes. any mesa labeled pair should work fine as long as it is the correct tube type.

I will second the Gflex replace the speakers and it will blow you away. Honestly for the used market price, a guy would be hard pressed to find something better.

Personally I have never understood why the manual calls for class A and triode for the most brootal metal tones. The marks distortion is mainly from the preamp (AFAIK), i tend to run my channel levels significantly higher than my master I find that i get the most aggressive and tight metal...
