If you place a tube in the pi position, what would be the tells that the tube is going bad? Can an amp work with a bad pi tube in it or not?

If there is a market for it, a con artist will find a way to scam it. Not really shocking news.

I have a mix of preamp tubes in my mark v. Changed out the v1, v2, and pi tubes with a mix of NOS tubes. WOW! Takes a nice amp and turns it into a tone monster. I doubt that any modern production tube will ever match what I am getting out of my amp now.

I started out in the 10 watt mode with it when I first got it. Now, I run in the 45 watt mode on all channels. I have still yet to really open the amp up and get the speaker, combo, moving. There may be more supprises in store down the road when I get to play at louder volumes.

I use them at home sometimes. Mostly I run with no eq or sliders in the eq mode on channel 3.

I pulled a 6L6 tube out of the socket to get access to replace a preamp tube. When I went to reinstall the 6L6 tube, I noticed that the center plastic sleve had snapped off in the amp. I can still reinstall the tube in the socket. I just don't know that much about tubes to know if the tube is...

I would say that I play Rock n Blues mostly. I am looking for the RFT to have the most impact on the 2nd and 3rd channels. Which is where I think it really works best.

I got some new tubes in today and decided to install them in my mark v. I placed a tung-sol reissue 12ax7 gold pin in the PI v7 position and a RFT ecc83 in the v1 position. I really could not make a connection with it while in the clean channel, meaning the effect was not as prodominate as...

Thanks to all who posted. I learned something new about my mark v today from all of you who took the time to add their 2 cents. I am looking forward to my winter vacation when I can spend more time with this amp.

My wish list would be to have more time to play the mark v I already own.

News update, I purchased a NOS RFT, a couple of the Tung-sol and Mullard reissue preamp tubes. Hope that I find what I am looking for in these preamp tubes.
