    Mark IIb serial numbers

Should that be RP 8B, robredo? I think that's the number on my circuit board (Serial #53xx), 1980 MK IIB, loaded, from June, 1980

Mark llB - difference between early and late models

Mine is a real early (May, 1980, serial #53xx) fully loaded combo with X100 tranny and RP 8B board. It may have been a stransitional model between the last IIAs and the IIBs — but it definitely has the effects loop, etc.

Any idea what wood this is? 1981 Mark IIB Hardwood Combo

Trying this one more time. If it doesn't work, screw it — you'll have to take my word for it. It's koa. <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://s1132.photobucket.com/user/Dude2Dude/embed/slideshow/"></iframe>

Any idea what wood this is? 1981 Mark IIB Hardwood Combo

Hi there, Here's some pics of my 1980 Mk IIB with what was said to be Koa. These shots were taken about six years ago, and the wood has continued to darken.

Any idea what wood this is? 1981 Mark IIB Hardwood Combo

@s-fresh: Mine was one of the first Mk IIBs, with a serial number in the high 5300s. The date on the chassis, if I recall correctly, was May, 1980. (Definitely from 1980.) I'll try to post a pic later today. But it really, really looks like yours -- except mine's packing an EVM.

Any idea what wood this is? 1981 Mark IIB Hardwood Combo

It looks exactly like mine, and my cabinet is Koa. They used it fairly extensively back then.

    Mark IIA or IIB?

It is odd, though, that his serial number (which is solidly into IIB territory) doesn't correspond with what should be the standard back plate configuration for a IIB, i.e., no Effects Send and Return jacks, only the Slave and Preamp Out/Power Amp In jack. Can anyone make sense of this? Could...

    Mark IIA or IIB?

At #5823, your serial number is way higher than my IIB, which is #5387. My chassis is dated June, 1980 on the underside. It was bought directly from Mesa, and I'm the sole owner. @igfraso, you'll note that my serial predates the #5575 cutoff by a significant amount. That info, which comes from...

V2A photos for a Mark IIB

Hi there, Here's a gut shot of my 1980 Mk IIB. It's factory fresh, no mods. https://imageshack.com/i/nfimg0037wlfj

Mark III lead tone compared to modern amps

I liked the second clip best, too -- great tone, nice touch. But I was surprised by the Dual recto; it sounded smoother than I thought it would by way of comparison. Nice job, all around.

    Warmth

I've found the Presence settings to be critical to smoothing out the sound, which some may think of as "warmth." I never run it more than 3, and usually it's between 1.5 and 2. It does darken the sound of the amp, so you may have to compensate by adding a bit of hair with your GEQ. Running the...

Anyone Still Have Original 6L6 Tubes From The '80's?

Sorry, but you were the one that raised the C+ because — I assumed, wrongly — that was your target tone. Tubes are to an amp as guitar strings are to an acoustic guitar: they can change your sound (sometimes a fair amount), but your core sound is not going to be altered dramatically. They...

Anyone Still Have Original 6L6 Tubes From The '80's?

No, it's about the sound. The old Sylvannia STR-387 and STR-415 tubes have a rich harmonic content. For some of us, they simply sound better than what's currently available. But don't expect miracles. They're great tubes, but if you don't have a C+ you won;t get one by swapping out current...
