Which Dual Rectifier is this? Solo? Roadster? Seems like there were quite a few models with the same naming scheme...

Thanks!

He says it's a dual rectifier... so 2 channel is the solo? Between a used solo and a used mark IV, which one would be the best choice? :)

The Solo amps in the recto line are their standards. Other amps like the Roadster, Road King, Tremoverb, Rectoverb, maverick, etc. are breakoffs that will suually have soemthing that sets them apart from the Solo amps. At the end of the day though they are all in the same family and for the most part all have the same characteristics. In my experience, the Solo rectos are usually a tad bit more aggressive, where other amps liek the Roadster or Tremoverb are a little smoother/darker.

As for saying what is a better choice between a 2 Channel Recto and a Mark IV, it all comes down to what voicing you like more. The Rectos have a different character than the mark IV so its not that one is better than the other, we're talking two very different amps both capibile of high gain and tons of tone. I would suggest you play a recto and a mark iv and go from there... you'll know right away which way you lean in terms of what type of high gain your looking for.

I agree 100% with you on trying them. Anyone in my area has both so I can try them out lol?

Actually, I'd love to find someone around here (south shore of Montreal, Qc) with a 4x12 and either amp to let my son try them and see if it's worth it to invest in that... The Express 5:50 is a great amp but doesn't quite deliver in the heavier sounds like DT/JP...

I bought my Roadster from Italmelodie, last time I was in there, they had pretty much one of every Mesa model and a bunch of different cabinets. They are more than happy to set you up in a room and let you try. You can do the same at Steve's in Montreal as well.

Steve is out of the question, I hate that place. I bought the Express 5:50 from there and the service (if you can call it that) was awful. As for Ital (where i have received good service before), I guess I could but do they have Mark IVs? I guess I'd have to call... But trying a store isn't fun... Crowded, noisy... And my son feels a bit intimidated in stores lol

Make sure you get some recommend setting for both these amps. They are not friendly to most on the first try .... this is very important. I have a Tremoverb, IV and Trident and what I like best seems to change with the wind direction. ....or what I am trying to do.

Great recommendation, wouldn't have thought of that. Thanks!

It didnt click who I was responding to before but it just clicked....I remember the thread a few months back when you were looking for the amp for your son. For the JP tones I would hands down get a Mark IV or maybe if you wnat to go new a Mark V. I would even venture to say a DC-10 as all 3 amps have the gain structure condusive of getting JP's tone.

The recto at the end of the day has a very different type of high gain and lacks the mids that give the mark IV and thus JP the tone he has. You could get somewhat close with a two channel recto, an mid heavy OD and/or an eq in the loop, but to me its like trying to make lemonade with oranges. Still tastes good but definitely not lemonade, so just go right to the source IMO. If you think the Mark IV or Mark V is too much amp for him the DC-10 and even DC-5 are great alternatives for having a mark iv type tone. The only benefit of the Mark V would be you buy it new whereas the other amps you have to find them and for the right right price in the right condition.

:) I remember your feedback on my previous inquiries lol.. I'm still around, still hunting :)

I saw that video I linked I thought the tone was great so I thought if I could catch a used one for cheaper than a mark iv it might be worthwhile... But then you start asking yourself... 1000$ for this or 1400$ for what we really would like? etc... Never ending this quest for tone. We love the Express but it's lacking something...

Thanks for the feedback :)

Finally got to watch the video (they block youtube at work :x ) and didnt realize you were linking to jonathan sendi. I've actually swapped a few messages with him on youtube inquiring how he got THAT tone out of his Recto. For starters its a 2 Channel Dual Recto but he does use an attenuator to get the power amp cooking a little more, so that plays into getting that type of mark-like compression.

I still think that a Mark IV or a DC-10 is more the kind of amp your looking for. Aside from being key parts to JPs tone, those amps are super versitile in the tones you can dial in so at the end of the day they make for a great tool for finding YOUR tone. The DC-10 is an especially great value as you can usually find them for $700-900 USD depending on the condition. The cool thing is to me they exibit a lot of the Mark IV type character in the gain and in the mids, yet at the same time has a deeper low end growl like the Rectos. Very cool combination if you ask me.

I had never played one up until a few years ago when i picked up this Mesa Halfback 4x12 from this guy locally... he used a DC-10 into that cab and the sound could rip your face off :D The cleans were also fantastic and if you throw a nice OD or clean boost infront of the clean, makes for a great mid-gain type lead/solo tone. To me the DC-10 is a very unheralded amp in the Mesa line, almost always over shadowed by the Mark IV or Rectos in terms of the high gain monsters.

Have i sold you on a dc-10 yet :D I dont want you to think i'm trying to sell you something... just trying to recommend a great amp and try and save you some money at the same time. The Mark IV is an absolute beast but also costs a few hundred more, so you can definitely find an awesome comprimise in the dc-10.

Yeah Jonathan's video is really good. DC-10... Like I needed another choice to confuse me even more lol

Hopefully I'll be able to find people locally to try them out. The DC-10 is another discontinued model so finding them in stores isn't likely.

Thanks!

I know the goal here is to obtain Petruccies tone but honestly going into amp selection tying to nail some ones specific tone usually ends up in disaster. You may narrow down your selection by using that method but in the end the amp choice (especially since it's a hefty investment) should be based on what gets a long with you the most.

You may love the sound of the mark iv ( i did) but it just may not be for you ( and it definitely wasn't for me). Plus, petrucci has used a roadking on other albums and such..... either a Mark IV or Recto will get you close enough, really.

It's not really trying to emulate the tone, more like, this is what we like... I mean if you listen to artist A who uses a Mesa, you're not going to go buy a Fender... :)

So if we don't nail the tone, that's fine, but at least we'll be ball park. I don't feel like the Mesa Express gets us there.

I'm just waiting for the right deal to come by in my area, and learning about how to choose and why pick one more than another etc... I appreciate all the input :)

Ain't learning fun?

Marc
