Hey gang!! It's painfully obvious I've been dragging my feet regarding my Mesa gear :wink: I snatched up my new gear this past Saturday. I bought a Roadster Head and a 2x12 Rectifier cab. They sound ridiculously enormous together :twisted::wink:

I haven't logged in much time on Channels 2 and 3 (in due time). I've been hooked on Channel 4. I've got a it selected to Bold and Modern (also with Diode). It's singing with saturation...lol. It sounds great for both rhythm and lead playing. I did notice that when the Recto tracking is on it has a sort of 'bass' boost (ideal for staccto riffing). The other night I had Channel 1 with Fat selected (the reverb dialed in mid way). I probably played open string chords for at least 30 minutes (the sound was so full and crisp).

Sorry if I jump off track (which guitarists are notorious for ), but
what effects do you guys use with your Mesas? I'm eyeing the Boss Digital Delay DD-3 and the Boss Super Chorus CH-1. Has anyone tried these out? I like to keep things pretty simple. I normally play dry on the high gain channel. However, on clean I do like to dabble with reverb, chorus, and occasionally delay.

I hope to post pictures and my settings in more detail this weekend.

Congrats man, I need to go try a Roadster, just to see what they sound like. I probably won't sell my triple to get one, especially since I want to eventually get a mark iv to run with it.....but, all this talk about them and the RK II really make me want to hook up to them, and hear them for myself.

I have over a dozen amps and god only knows how many efx processors, pedals, etc., and I always seem to come back to the same combination, Mark IV short head with two Thiele 1-12s and for efx DD-5, CH-1, TR-2(Keeley modded), BF-2, NS-2, and a SD SFX-01. The efx are used sparingly with the NS-2 and the SD SFX-01 only being used with single coil guitars. These six pedals are housed in a Boss BCB-60 pedalboard. Boss may not be the top of the line in efx but they sound good enough for me and they are very dependable.

Why do folks like the Recto cabs for their Roadsters more than the Roadster cabs?

Thank god you didn't get a combo. Open back loses you a shitload of low end frequencies.

The Roadster Combo is closed back. It has tons of bass.

When I got my Roadster, I tried the 2x12 combo, but bought the head because it was lighter. Big mistake, I really liked the combo's tones much better.

The combo had a certain sized cab with Vintage 30's. I think it was ported on the back also.

I tried the head with 5 different cabs after I got it home. None of them had the same tone that the combo had.

The 3/4 back cab sounds the best to my ears with the Roadster. I'll be upgrading my 1x12 3/4 back to a 2x12 3/4 back as soon as I find one here locally. I'm done shipping large items! UPS beats things up too much...

Think that it's easier on the tubes overall to get a head, speakers in a high powered combo over time can shake tubes to their detriment, less backache carrying head around than a combo, and more cab choices for convenience and shaping your tone. Different cabs=different tonal possibilities with same or different speakers...it's fun to build/desigh/customize your own cabs, too. Some nice posts on this thread.

I ordered the Boss Delay DD-3 and Phaser PH-3. The DD-6 was tempting. I knew that I wouldn't use the reverse and warp modes (so why spend the extra $ ?!). The DD-3 has enough variety for my liking. I chose to go with the PH-3 since one of my songs revolves around a phaser. A chorus pedal is in my future..hehe. I'll share my opinions on the pedals after I have time to experiment with them

The Roadster cab wasn't available (unless I wanted to wait four months). I'm very happy with my Recto cab. It offers plenty of bottom end yet has incredible clarity. It's much easier to transport than the combo too :wink: I can't comment on the 2x12 3/4 back...

Yes, the combo is closed back (which is a plus for those of us that like our music heavy :twisted. I've heard both the combo and head. There's no audible difference though.

This weekend I plan on tweaking Channel 2. I'll have to share my settings with you guys soon. I'd be curious what you all have your amps set at (especially those that own the Roadster).

I use CH1 for tweed and CH2 for fat clean. Works well for me!
