A few of you may have answered this already, but I thought I would ask you all properly this time!

What is the music like where you live on the bigger and smaller scene?

Here in the UK it seems to be mostly second rate indie bands like the Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs or all this X factor garbage.

I live in NY suburbs. The local scene is mostly punk for the younger crowd. At least they draw the largest crowds. Most of the bar/clubs have a nice mix of rock/blues etc.
I'm 37 now (!) and play in a blues/rock band, but we do alot of stuff from ska, older metal, grunge etc. I used to love punk when I was young, and still like some of it, but the pop punk is just not the same thing...
Thing is, punk is only cool when it's not cool. When it becomes mainstream, it gets washed out. De-construction is in order here..
Sorry for ranting.

I live about 7 miles from downtown New Orleans. Katrina kicked the crap out of our music scene, obviously. Believe it or not...its coming back. My classic rock cover band is getting more and more work, and most of the suburban clubs are back online. Many of our big clubs were destroyed, but hopefully will be rebuilt. No major acts have come to town since the storm, and I'm not sure when that will improve. The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival will be going on in May, so that's gonna be a good deal.

The local scene here is a mix...much jazz...both dixieland and guitar type modern stuff...some metal/hardcore...some art-fart lame-o crap..80's cover bands that do the skits/costumes thing....classic rock bands like us...moldy oldie bands (same tired setlist since 1957)...and some blues/rock combos....

Overall, considering that we got annihilated...the scene is shaping up quickly.

Red,
Glad to hear your scene is coming back. Here in the Rock and Roll capitol city (Cleveland,) it is a joke. Radio sucks, if you can actually catch a song and not a commercial. No promotion of local talent on the radio. The times are a changin'. I guess I should be happy gigging a couple of times a month and getting paid. I travel a lot and try to see other bands as much as I can. New Orleans was definitely a happening scene, I also like Austin, Texas a lot. Keep on jammin'.

here in glasgow it is pretty poor. not many good places to play although i guess we do get a reasonable number of visiting names.

hey Koprofag. i used to play a lot in cambridge. do you play there at all?

Yup. Here in the Bay Area its about the same but add some of that "grindcore" stuff, and alot of karaoke lol.

Albuquerque Sucks ***! We have a bunch of cliquish crappy garage indie rockers that think their crap don't stink. In conjunction with the delusion of granduer that they will be the next band signed. Look elsewhere folks.

I am a solo musician playing every weekend in Central Western NSW, Australia. I mainly play classic rock, evergreens and country rock. There is plenty of work here and the money isn't bad, some venues paying up to $700au for solo artists like myself.

Cheers

I've posted a similar comment on Vegas' local forum www.yourlocalscene.com

"The musician's mind is rife with delusions of grandeur"

Oh & BTW

Please don't brow beat me about the Killers & Panic! At the Dickso (<--not a typo). I'm glad they've drawn attention to our city, but they're not representative of the bands I see and play in here in Vegas. There are a few bands here that I enjoy. Here's one... check out The Day After.
