what is the difference between gain stages!???

i know this might be a stupid question but i am confused about what is the differences between the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gain stage preamp tubes. i am looking to increase the gain on channel 4 mainly in my roadking II but i'm not sure of any good high gain preamp tubes

ok but i have one more question which is if i put a jj 12ax7 into the 1st and 2nd gain stage will it affect the clean channels

I belive yes - V1 effects everything on every amp I know of. It has more effect on tone and gain than any other tube. You can shape the tone and gain a lot by using different tubes here even if they look the same.

Most of the time it is the one near the input jack.
