Hi all!
I have just signed up to this forum and have my first MB rig! Boy, am I stoked!! I bought a Dual Rec Tremoverb 2 Channel Head (Mint w/ new 6L6's) and a 212 Rectifier closed back Cab.
I want to get a 2nd 212 cab and am considering another 212 Rec to stack, but is there a better choice? I have read some debate about open/closed back cabs. Would adding a different type cab create a more balanced tone? Does anyone use (2) 212 Rec Cabs?
I play an Epi Les Paul Custom w/ SD Jazz and JB; and a Gibson SG Classic w/P90's. Play mostly rock, classic rock, blues and some metal.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Scott

First off welcome to the board.

I currently have a 2ch DR, 4x12(standard) and 2x12 Recticifer Cabs. I've always been curious what 2 2x12's would sound like. I think it would be "tighter" than a standard 4x12.

A 4x12 would definitely complement your set up, but I've found that if you plan on running both the 4x12 and the 2x12 you really have to be cranking the amp; to push enough air, to truly get the benefits of running both cab's.

I have found the 2x12 at cranked tones to sound almost as good as a 4x12, where as I prefer the 4x12 at lower volumes as opposed to the 2x12.

It's all a matter of trying different things out and finding what you like. I buy used because Mesa gear holds it's "used" value. You can usually buy something, try it and then sell it; using the money to cover the next item.

Hope that helps.

I just got a second 2x12 last night and now run 1 open and 1 closed back 2x12 and it sound great. The open back gives you a bigger clean sound and the closed back keeps the low end tight.

I recorded this quick clip today with my cam corder. I'll try to get some Audio files up for you dial up users if I can. This is just guitar>mesa>Avatar 2x12 vintage cab loaded with Warehouse v30 clones. The cab is closed back.

I was running in blues mode and then switch to modern later. You can see my settings at the start of the video. My strat is a Fender Lonestar with Pearly Gates in the bridge and a SCN single in the neck that I switch to and roll down the volume for some clean parts. I only switch to the clean channel once during the vid.

Pardon the crappy playing and tone through a cam corder, but I think the quality isn't that bad considering it's a cam corder.

get yourself a freda live! 2x12.... its front vented and compliments a closed back cab very well.... it has a huge wide spread like an open back or thiele, except its super tight and you dont lose all the volume of a closed back...... if you wanna keep it tight, articulate, and big especially at low volumes, a front vented cab is the way to go... especially if you play at low levels..... they're a little cheaper than the big guys but with the same quality.... and they're very light.... check it out they use a recto in their demo videos on the site....
